Villages
« on: February 16, 2012, 07:45:04 AM »
It sounds like, 1.2, villagers will be getting updated AI.

Also, it looks like they'll be able to reproduce and will multiply to fill the number of houses in a village. So you could expand an NPC village and they would eventually fill it in.

Oh, my.  Imagine creating a city—filled with Minecraftians!  The temple!  The temple can be filled with pilgrims!

Hmm, I wonder how we'd get them to the temple and if they'd stay. I'll wait until the current build is a little further along in testing and see what people are reporting on.

Weird. Fixored.

The new snapshot lists "Added a defense mob to villages". Sounds interesting.

I thought with 1.0 that MC was everything I ever wanted and more. Then 1.1 came out and I got even more. Now I can't wait for 1.2.

Edit: It's golems.

I need to get my butt back into Minecraft.  They used to add things at a nice pace... now it's just... so fast.

Most of this stuff is upcoming 1.2 stuff, not stuff out now.

1.0 was November, then we didn't get 1.1 until last month. If 1.2 comes out next month, we're at about 2 months an update. It seems to me that the lead up to 1.0 had updates coming out far faster. That may not be true though.

The updates coming out now contain more changes, I feel.  I'm probably just still reeling from the 1.0 update.  It contained so many new things.  I like to know everything in Minecraft but I still don't know anything about enchanting, the Ender realm and abandoned castles.

I found that village I found before. It's not big enough to generate any golems. Pianoman should be impressed with my experiment to increase the population.

I'm still not sure how to get them to the temple or to spawn. Most people use rail, but I'm over 2km away. I'm not building a side road that long again. I started mining for cobble for buildings and for building a nether road and I hit an abandoned mineshaft. It actually gave me a fair bit of rail so far. Not enough to run it the whole way, but with a team of people you could pick up the rail from the back and run it to the front. I don't know, that's my only thought.

Haha, well, if the villagers love your cobblestone as much as I do…

I found a village, too, near the jungle where I picked up the saplings.  It was on the other side of spawn from the temple, though, so it'd be pretty far from temple.

They love them so much, they built three golems in their honor.

...then they crammed into my shack.

...and watched me sleep.

Hahaha, I give up… your cobblestone structures have won.  But one day, when you're sleeping, I will make over spawn.  And then I'll have my revenge against cobblestone.

Nope. Cobblestone huts are so two days ago. Turns out you can cram a row of 3x3 huts with shared walls and only 1x1 interiors under a layer of sand, and their population will increase accordingly.  They actually seem to prefer the subterranean slums.

There are some restrictions to what they'll consider a home that I didn't expect, but for the most part, it's pretty simple.

I've been doing a lot of experimenting. I'm pretty sure I can get vilagers to populate the temple.

If the floor of the temple doubles as the roof of their homes, I can hide their homes under the temple to force population. If I can give them a way to get up and down, they should spend most of their time above ground. I have an idea in my head of how it would work.

Now I just need to figure out how to move them.

Ah, so the villagers finally have a use.

They also build golems. I vow that I will get them to guard Spawn with golems. I have three villagers at spawn (one disappeared), but my few plans to get them to populate were flawed. I mean, building efficient means of getting them to reproduce is easy enough, but like with the road, it's the whole aesthetics thing.

The trading seems more complicated than I expected. It seems that each villager only offers you one option, though there are arrows as if there are additional options. My assumption is that you must take an offer to unlock more options. That's just a guess though.

Villager AI keeps getting updated.

In 1.4 they'll "like" you if you trade with them, and "dislike" you if you attack them or stand by with they are attacked. Presumably "liking" will reward you with better trades.

Also, villagers attacked by zombies have a chance of turning into zombie villagers. Even more rarely, baby zombie villagers.

Yeah, villagers are slowly getting toward what I first expected of them.

I thought you needed emeralds to trade with the villagers? I haven't seen any emerald yet.

You also get emeralds from trading. The ones that buy renewable resources are a great source. Don't over do it though. I think trades expire if you use them too much. The wiki is a little confusing.
