Road
« on: February 11, 2012, 04:59:53 AM »
The road is a persistent feature and ongoing project on our server. All are free and encouraged to aid in construction.

The road is designed to serve as a landmark and as a major transportation system. It travels in a straight line and straight through anything in its path. It is composed of two lines of rail on either side and a canal down the middle. It is lit by tubes of lava on either side. As a general rule, traffic is expected to keep left.

The road begins at 0,0 and travels straight north, east, south, and west. At 5,000 meters in each direction, at 0,5000, 0, -5000, 5000,0, and -5000,0, the road once again splits into a four way intersection, running north, east, south, and west.

The road is composed of a 2x9 foundation of cobble stone beginning 3 meters above sea level. The left and right of this foundation are topped with 1x3 layers of smoothstone. Each of those has a line of rail running down the middle. Every 5th rail is a booster rail. The resulting middle 1x3 space is filled with water source blocks. Either side of the structure is flanked by a 2x3 encasement of lava in glass. When passing through terrain, the road is encased in an 8x15 tunnel on stone brick.

When constructing, it is perfectly acceptable to build in stages. It is often advisable to extend the bottom central line of cobble stone out immense distances in front of the rest of the road. This enables the structure to serve its primary purpose as a landmark as well as a starting point to expand on the road at any point. Torches are advisable for initial lighting during construction. Lava and glass can be difficult to obtain and are expected to be added later. Rail can be added as needed as it is another rare resource. Tunnels are purely cosmetic.

It looks like you're on a branch off of the south road and you're extending it west.

Well I got sick of digging a hole so I just started heading further along the road. I just used dirt blocks but it goes a fair way.

I am honing my design for the 5k point that I placed dibs upon (east from spawn, past my Tree).  I see that a portal has already between created there!  I'll have to move that.  Do you want the centre of the point to be at exactly X=5000?

LOL @ Pam... if I had $20 for every time someone used that word with me... well....

Oh yeah, that was the first test of the 5k portals. That's why the map was generated all the way down there, but I didn't remember doing it.

I don't care where the portal is. I guess I'd prefer it be close enough to the 5K mark so we don't have to rework it on the nether side. Those can be tricky sometimes, but with a little work you can get it to match with a portal that isn't right on.

I was hoping the road itself would have a four way intersection right at 5K. Check out Z 5K or X -5K on the map.

As far as the actual base, I guess I just assumed it would be incorporated into the road like the 0,0 point. I hadn't even thought of not. Now that you propose the idea, I can't think of any reason that it would have to be. The only really important thing for me is that there's ultimately a largish established safe structure along the road every 5K for rest, resupply, storage, etc.. Eventually, we could have a whole grid of 5 kilometer long roads with a rest stop at each one.

I'm not sure if I'm making sense. To MSPaint! Black are roads we have. Red are roads we would have as we expand out if/when we expand out that far. Each intersection would, ideally, have a fully functioning base. Cool looking bases would be a huge plus.

I'm about one third completing the road out east to the 5k point.  Once I'm there, I'll build my safety zone.

Also, I'll make a side road, sort of a scenic detour, for anyone who wants to see what I've been doing out here.  I've made a few farms, a big mine, a semi-automatic wheat harvester, a bridge.. I'm even camped out at a nearby skeleton spawner so I can level up faster.  I want to enchant something when I reach level 50.  It'll be my first ever enchantment!

P.S. We need a good train system on our roads.  Can anyone build [noembed]something like this[/noembed]?

I've run the rails down into the first basement level at spawn just so that there'd be some room to build a good station.

I'd also like a standardized junction for side roads. I like the side road heading north from the main road by the temple, but there's no good interaction with the main road.

Yeah, I didn't think ahead.  We have not established standard intersections, standard stop points, destination selection... and I have to say that I should never have suggested making a waterway run through the centre of the road.  Not to mention that the water bloody freezes solid in colder temperatures.

I think an intersection at every 5k is good enough for standardized intersections. Other than that, I'm in favor of putting smaller offshoot roads as they're needed. I'd love some sort of standard intersection style though.

I still like the canal. Boats are working a lot better now. I think it's worth it.

Yeah, running rail up one side is only half the work. Haha. I can't believe you got all the stone and stuff for road. That's almost as hard as the collection of iron for the rail.

I think the stone is harder work, or at least is in my type of mine.  I have over 600 iron stockpiled at the moment but it's hard to keep my stone up.  The road just gobbles it.

600 iron? Holy crap.

Yeah, when I was doing major digging at Spawn, I was still putting stone down on roads as fast as I was digging it up.

Lanky showed me his pretty kickass train station today. I have to admit that it wasn't what I was originally expecting, but I love it more than anything I was thinking of.

It is a little rough looking right now, but it works great. I know Lanky said he wanted to mess with the circuitry a little, but once he's done, I might toy around with the aesthetics.

I had two days off from life, so I did some pretty major work on the road.

One thing that I've been toying around with in my head is an overpass/interchange for those three wide side roads. I built what I want it to look like, structurally, but I haven't perfected the mechanism side of it yet. Basically, it consists of a trench to stop you, a lever to select the track you want, and a button to send you on your way again. I really want it to be extremely minimalist too. I've had some designs that I really like, but they didn't work consistently. I've had some that work consistently, but you're so deep in the trench that you can't see which direction you're selecting.

I'm going to keep toying with it, but if you want to get a look at what I'm trying to do, it's at Temple.

You can now see the extensive road work done on the new map. I've been concentrating mostly on the east/west stretch between Lanky's base and Pianoman's far east base. Sorry for any rail outage I may have left.

You can also see a few of my proposed intersections. One at temple, the start of one by the village on the east road, and one by Pianoman's east road base. The one at the temple is the only one that has any toying with the redstone. Feel free to tinker.

Cool.  Maybe we should create stations.  It's impossible, given how many different sites we've created, to just push one button from any location and travel to any other location.  Stations would allow us to minimise the redstone required.

The way I've started to set it up, you would go the direction towards your destination, then turn offwhen you get there.

Any time there's a big crossroad, there's an overpass. Ideally, it will stop you at that overpass, you'll flip a switch to keep going forward, or turning off at this intersection. So I guess it's a minimalist version of a station.

Like I said, I'm still working on something that is unobtrusive enough for me. However, seeing as how I've already built this giant overpass thing, maybe I should go all out and build something more substantial.

I guess I've been thinking of it more as a road than as a railway. Maybe I need to adjust my thinking.

I don't know. I think we did a pretty good job. We came up with our design before usable boats or booster rails. We were pretty far ahead of the curve. I can make the intersections work the way I want, just not in a way that looks pretty enough yet.

I did some good work on the road this weekend. That is, before I couldn't connect to any servers for some reason. Still a fair way to go, but I'll get there.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I regret suggesting waterways in the middle of our main roadways. I like the look and I don't mind building for it... but I can't see myself ever going over the waterways in a boat.

Thanks so much for the help on the road.

I love your canals. I've only taken a boat back to spawn once when I lost my cart, but I still love them.

Well, as long as someone appreciates my waterway idea.

Nah, I was out in the east, working my way towards the 5k spot where I have to build my safety zone.

You know, I've designed my 5k safety zone, but it's like yours above ground, that is it's not closed off. I might just dig underground like your spawn base for the safety area.
