I think you're 17 hours ahead of me. When it's noon here, it's 5am there. The way I do it is switch the am and pm and add 5 hours. You can do the same and subtract 5.

When we've played at the same time, it's usually been around 10pm to 1am my time. If my math is right, that would have made it around 3pm to 6pm there. Does that sound right?

The four of us descend to the lowest levels of the world, cast in eternal darkness. It is here that we will breach the walls between this world and the next.

Even surrounded by 100s of torches, we cannot see more than a few feet in front of our faces. We have to stay close or risk losing the rest of the party. While much of this area has been secured, there is no guarantee that monsters do not lurk in the darkness.

We each don matching armor and brandish matching diamond swords and make our way through the dark towards the sound of the nether portal.

We take one last look at this world, well aware of the dangers we are about to face, and plunge through purple mist.

We find ourselves in a world covered in fire and lava. We see strange pig-like creatures that seem to make this place their home. They are grotesque, but seem content to leave us in peace.

Without any notice a giant white creature descends from the ceiling, hurling fireballs from it's monstrous mouth. We quickly dig out a shelter and hide. After a time, we decide this is a threat we must deal with if we ever want to return home, much less spend any time in this world. We dig tunnels through the hellish earth and attack the creature from strategic positions.

After a fierce battle, the monster is slain. However, in our fight, we seem to have inadvertently injured one of the pig monsters. They retaliate by attacking one of our own. As we defend our comrade, we only draw more of the angry pig men to our position. We are quickly swarmed and outnumbered. Though we ultimately drive off the attack, it is not without the grave wounding of one of our party. He is forced to recuperate as the rest of us attempt to cobble together a temporary shelter.

Time has no meaning in this world, we could have been down there for weeks for all I know, but it seems that we have adapted to this hostile environment in a matter of days. Fierce monsters that would have slaughtered us in heartbeat back in the overworld soon no longer posed a threat to us. The constant danger surrounding us had forced us to evolve.

We find that many of the materials we brought from our own world afford us protection here. Simple stone is completely resistant to the attacks of the ghastly flying creatures. We begin to construct a structure to protect ourselves. We are becoming quite cozy here in the nether. We even seem to have mended relations with the pig men and have entered a fragile truce.

As we grow more comfortable in our surroundings, we begin to explore our surroundings. We spread out and gather rare materials never seen on our world. Before long we stumble upon a large ancient structure. While it seems to be inhabited by the pig men, they do not seem to be sophisticated enough to have built it themselves. Who had the ability to build this castle right in the midst of a lava lake? It is mostly empty other than a few strange plants that we gather for further study.

Ultimately unimpressed, we leave the structure and explore even further while also continuing to fortify our positions. As we ventured even further, we found more of these abandoned structures. Though we have no reason to think they will yield anything of value, we explore them. Not 100 meters in the structure, we find a room pouring our beings made of flame.

We may think we have become powerful, but it is clear that this world still holds surprises even for us. We retreat to the safety of our nether base for the time being and recuperate.

Lanky has done tons of work on the overhang. It's amazing. I love how it's turning out.

I've started building main roads off of the portal. 625 in the nether lines up with 5,000 in the main world. With that we can eventually fast travel to the intersection bases. I put a portal on the east nether road at 625 if you want to try it out. I'm open to any design ideas too. I just did a line of cobble for now to get there.

I logged on last night for 20 mins to explore what had been done.  It's amazing.  Lanky's expansion goes on forever and so do your roads!  I actually found that east portal, took it, and realised it lined up with 5000 in the overworld.  Too good.  Satisfying.

When we start building 5k bases, we'll have to make sure to include portals. As long as it's pretty close to 5,000, it'll line up with 625 in the nether.

I should have built north first. That way I can get to the amusement park faster.

Any idea for a road design? Otherwise I'm just going to do cobble. It'd be nice to include rail too.

Cobblestone will make a fine Nether road.  We have an ambitious road in the overworld that is quite draining to build.  I don't want to replicate that drain in the Nether.

As for 5k base portals, I can incorporate one in the direct centre of the base that I'm going to build.

I don't know how much of a hassle it is to run all the way up to the top level for cobble, so I threw together a cobblestone generator at the bottom of the stairs. (I built half of one in the nether before I remembered ((by pouring it)) that you can't pour water in the nether. Pulling that apart killed my diamond pick.)

Just wack the cobble and it comes right back. No idea if it's any faster, but there it is.

Nice generator.  You get bonus points for making it a double cobblestone generator.  But you didn't have to make it with obsidian?

P.S. I'm working on the Nether base too.

I was just looking for a simple design. Some of them are needlessly over complicated.

I figured obsidian would prevent any accidental disassembling. It's not like we're short of lava these days.

P.S. I'm working on the Nether base too.

That is so awesome. I'm sorry you have to keep replacing windows. I swear I'm not trying to stand by them when the ghasts see me.

Haha, that's OK.  I put them in for viewing the Nether (obviously) once we have a completely enclosed safe haven, but until that area is finished they're gonna be able to see us and smash a bit of glass in the mean time.  I have to admit that it seems a lot easier to build than the very first time I ventured into the Nether (in single player mode).  I swear there were so many ghasts that I could barely get one wall up.  Maybe their spawn rate has been nerfed since those early days?

Thank you for the offer!  I would like some:
regular wood (not birch)
• more smooth stone so that I can craft it into stone bricks
• keep the glass coming
dirt, saplings and flowers (we're gonna bring a bit of the overworld to the Nether)
bows and arrows
• some redstone powder — we gonna build us some fancy base in tha Nether.  Ain't never seen this style!

I agree. The first time I went in, I died instantly. Before this, I've never been able to last more than a couple minutes there. Maybe we just needed that group to carve out a good safe haven.

regular wood (not birch)

There's a good chunk of pine growing in the tree farm. Take anything you want as long as you replant everything. I'll plant some regular trees when I get back to spawn.

Bringing the mushroom cows even from one island to another took ages. I decided I could maybe use the newly settled nether to get my cows and dirt back to spawn.

I've been dredging out a road for a few days now. It took a long time, but nowhere near as long as I expected. I'm not there yet, but I'm underneath the nether base.

Once I figure out how to get the road up the cliff face, I'll be recruiting volunteers to escort cows to spawn. We need at least one herder and at least one person on defense. More would be ideal.

At least I'll have a path leading to the mushroom island I, guess.

Dang, the youngens are asking the obvious questions before we are.  Does that mean we're getting old?

Why do you need a path?  Cows can swim.  The mooshrooms can follow you in the water.  Or does something happen to them in water?

I will have to end up having the cows swim most of the way back. There's no way I'm building a bridge that far.

I just meant a path through the nether. I did get it up to the main nether area. I had to cut through solid ground, which I had been trying to avoid, but it's done. Also, I did some math and got a portal to connect to the lighthouse island too.

There's a portal at the amusement park too, but I don't remember the coordinates for that. We'll have to get a nether path out there eventually.

I went through the nether the other night and was amazed at the extensive highways you've built to various portals.  One for the village, another for the mushroom island and the lighthouse.  Not to mention the destinations themselves!  You and your cousin have been doing some very cool stuff.

Yeah, I'm not often on at the same time as him, so I really needed a fast way to get back and forth to those remote locations.

There's an OCD side of me that is stressed out at the randomness of the roads, but there's another side that kind of likes the meandering, organic look.

I like the meandering look, too.  If I try to make things symmetrical all the time it looks uninspired.  There's a certain beauty to making things look a little more organic.  I'm doing just that at my current mine.  I think you'd like it.

Besides, you could hardly call the 5k points random.  Spawn point is as strictly uniform as you can get!

I would like to build a super proper awesome Nether base, with lots of tiles imported from the overworld.  Do we get to fight dragons in SMP?

LOL @ Pam... if I had $20 for every time someone used that word with me... well....

I'd probably have like $60

I think you can bring everything but water.

You and Lanky already have an awesome base going. I'm in awe everyone I come through that area.

A while back I did a ton of work on the roads leading to 5k points in the nether. They're pretty rough, but I think you can get to all the 0,5000 points, and most of the 5000,5000 points.

Do we get to fight dragons in SMP?

Yup. Find the strongholds. Complete the portal. Battle the dragon! ...bring me with.

So that's how you find a dragon.

My focus has mainly been on the surface world, but i have built the starting of a fort around the nether portal linked to my castle.
It makes jumping to the nether so much safer! And it's impervious to ghast fireballs.

Also i noticed a little sign outside it saying it was awesome, so i assume someone found it.

I hope the Nether's a lot more dangerous than a year and a half ago, which is when my laptop crapped out (can't run Minecraft on this computer). The very first time I went in, it was the most dangerous and creepy place.

And it's impervious to ghast fireballs.
I like importing stone from the overworld, since it's impervious to fireballs. It's just a shame that glass breaks, because I would put that everywhere for viewing portals. It's creepy when you can't see the ghasts flying around you.

Use iron bars in place of glass.
Although that being said, they don't shoot at you when they can see you through glass; only when you're exposed.

And there's the rub: they don't shot at you while you have glass up, but in the middle of construction, with exposed parts, they were shatting all over my glass.

Can they see you through iron bars? Is the Nether still scary? Lanky had a propensity to attack the zombie pigmen…

I'm always still wary when i'm in the nether.

You want fear? Find the nether fortress beyond my little fort. hunting wither skeletons in a nether fortress, ye shall know fear.

Although you will also now find chickens in the nether. They wandered through the portal in my basement.

WTF? Chickens can wander through portals?

Wither skeletons... they do some nasty poison thing, don't they? They came in after I was forced out of the game.

Everything can pass through the portals now. you can throw stuff through it.
My castle may have.....a chicken problem. Though one day i logged on and they were all gone. I had no idea where they were. Seems the all went through the portal lol

As for the with skeletons, they're grey, so they're really hard to see. They're three blocks tall, so they're huge.
They are almost silent except for this subtle bone jangling noise.
And they can kill you, super quick.
Plus, they're mainly in nether fortresses, which are full of other nasties like the fire elementals that just seem to appear.

Excellent. So Minecraft got harder. You're making me salivate at the chance to get back into it.

Also, having a bunch of chickens wandering through the Nether is quite funny.

Yup hahaha. And to top that off there were zombie pigmen in my base who i accidentally hit and knocked them into the portal.
So when i went to the nether i was immediately attacked.

So you could create a portal in the middle of a nether fortress and have sick baddies all in your overworld junk?

Yup.
There are a few caveats, but essentially anything can pass through from either side.

A year or two ago i had a ghast in my overworld base. That was fun!
