Minecraft
« on: December 09, 2009, 12:38:55 PM »
This is pretty much my dream game.

It's a sandbox game.  Basically it's like a giant room with access to infinite life-sized lego blocks.

Lanky and/or Kibble, will you please tell me how to set up a Lankyland server for this?

Can we get a Java warning on this kind of stuff. Some of us did Java at Uni and haven't been the same since. ;)

Oops.  I forgot all about codism.

*edit*

Wait, that looks like discrimination of fish.  Codeism?  Hmmm.

Its not codeism its just every time I come across Java it make me want to cry. Saying that so does C# these days, which is unfortunate as that's my day job at the moment. I cry a lot. :)

I'd love to be able to tell you what to do about setting that up but I haven't a clue and the website doesn't exactly scream information at you.

You can only RTFM if the site puts it on the front page right under your nose. Well, not so much 'you' as 'I' really. :)

Hard to explain, so check this out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaMTedT6P0I

It's a block-java game which you can build ANYTHING. Boats, minecarts, caves, mountains, UNDERGROUND LAIRS - but do it before nightfall, otherwise the skeletons and the wolves will have yo ass.

Demo here, full game with crafting is $10

I have the hacked version, so if we DO get this up and running I can distribute to all LLand peeps, and we all can play the (almost) current version without forking over the $10 each.

I'm all about stealing from giant companies, but this guy made a great game in his basement.  I gladly forked over my $10 after playing the free version for 10 minutes.

One year.  One year I was off of that game, you dick.  I was free.  Then you're all like, "come play it again, it's even better than before."  And I'm all, "sure, what the fuck, I'll log in."  Then, bam, it's fucking 6:30 in the morning and I have to leave for work.

...right after I add on more level onto my tower.

...and a row of torches.

...oh, and I can make better swords now that I got iron.  I better see how well that works on the stupid spiders so I can get some string to make some bows and then I can take out the zombies from further away...

I hate you!

Meh.  I liked sandbox mode before.  The old survival version sucked.  The new Alpha though, that is some fun shit.  I never want to play sandbox again.

It looks like it saves the levels as files now.  Does that mean you can share the files?

Bwahahaha.  And this is why the third little pig built his house out of stone.

There was no fire like that when I used to play.  There was lava that would burn stuff, but not fire that would spread.

I'm no architect, but I built a stronghold - mud and stone on the top level, digging underground revealed about 60% stone, so I fleshed downstairs out with 100% stone, replacing so it all matched. Shots attached.

The third shot is my personal joy - taken from the highest point on my walls, it stretches high into the night sky: a beacon, so no matter were I am when night falls I can find home.

I'll screenshot my work in progress.  Also, since Lanky can't do a LL server, maybe Otter would able?  Then we can get all of us on one map.  I know LG wanted in on that earlier.  Otter, we know nothing about this stuff, we just want a dedicated LL Minecraft server. Pain in the ass?

oh hai!  I c what u did thar...

Super just directed me here via private message... I hadn't seen this thread because I typically skip the video game section... don't usually have a lot of time to play games (even though I sure would like to).

For $10, I'll even buy it.

My biggest concern is how much bandwidth it would steal - technically speaking I'm 100% positive I can do it.

Let me research a little and get back to you!

Re: Minecraft

quite possibly nothing... I'm thinking I might setup Linux in a VM on my computer at home to do this but I'm not sure what the bandwidth requirements are and since I have ADSL at home - it might not be enough.

I want to contain it in a VM because I'm uncomfortable about the possible security flaws around alpha/beta software... but I'm pretty comfortable with it when I put it inside a little sand-box and poke specific holes through just for the primary connections.

So yeah... I can set it up here at work the same way (in a VM on my computer)... that might ultimately be better.  I suppose if I make it a VM I can also easily move the .vhd from one place to the next if needed and then just inform you guys when the location changes... sounds like a good plan all of a sudden.... then if needed it could be transferred safely to another LL member too and "replayed" there.

Otter - you may need to purchase the game to use it, or you could use Super's login. Then, if you host, I'm 80% sure others can jump on your server for free, as you are hosting.

If that doesn't work, I have an older version which is still pretty current, and am pretty certain you could use it to set up a free server, and free for others to play.

There must be a way to control who can get on it.  If it costs Otter money, I was going to suggest a small fee for people that want to play on a private Lankyland server to cover costs and Otter's time.

I looked at the online stuff.  The new adventure game thing isn't available for multiplayer yet, so we can only play the old original game, which is the one I was talking about originally anyway, so that's cool with me until the new version is ready for multiplayer.

ok... I've setup a server... no idea if I've done it right... followed instructions here:

http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Tutorial/Setting_up_a_server

I CAN access it from outside the firewall (verified)... I have NOT published it on the Minecraft web site because I don't want everyone in the world hitting our server - and also because LL's forum is google-able I won't post it here for the world to see.

I will - however - PM both of you with the info.

So attempt a connection and let me know what you find... I'm not even sure I've got the right thing running.  It didn't cost me anything.

My bad, error is 'the name wasn't verified by minecraft' - can you switch your server so it accepts non-verified names?
I used to think piracy was bad, because I first heard about it by people who didn't understand it. I understand piracy now. Piracy is good.

I did find a setting... but it was a little scary... I went ahead and did it.  Give it a try and let me know if that's the problem.

The warning I got when I changed it was this:

###############WARNING##################
verify-names is set to false! This means that anyone who
connects to this server can choose any username he or she
wants!  This includes impersonating an OP!
If you wish to fix this, edit server.properties, and change
verify-names to true.
###############WARNING##################

So yeah, give it a whirl... and let me know.

MAH BRICK HOUSE! Thanks for the help on the roof, I propose a NS and EW pink bridge, connecting the 4 corners of this hallowed land. Converging.... on.... my house?

I made a little diagonal one so I can get over to my house.  I'm all for something a little nicer.  I plan on building out from that corner fairly substantially still.  Another level and maybe crest over that hill.

LOL... my computer restarted itself for Windows Updates at 3am and didn't restart the VM... I'll fix that, but probably not today... in meetings all day.  Sorry for anyone who tried to access it while it was offline!

I think I pretty much finished up on the basics of my house.

Also, I built a sharp tooth leg, but it's up on a hill and I'm worried I'm going to hit the height limit when I try to finish him off.

It's just a flat road.  It doesn't take that long.  ...until I accidentally flood it.  I'll fix that eventually.

I'm pretty sure that new house next to you in Lanky's  I also gave him a hand making that pyramid in the lake.

I made a house that has a moat now. It will soon have a very deep moat as I was digging underground. Contemplating digging the moat down to the lava so that I can have the tallest building around.

Careful with the main road.  It's under the water level.  Lanky and I spent half an hour unflooding it today.  ...then he flooded it again.

My bad.

Still, the road is fun, it'll take you past the upside down pyramid.

Your pyramid got gigantic fast.  I'm glad you didn't star any lower or you would have completely blocked out the sun.

I started a lighthouse, but I hit the top of the sky way too early.  Now I built the roof and I'm building down towards the ground.  Sorry for the eyesore.

Lanky, you are a road building machine.

I'm over it on the lighthouse.  I built it down from the top, but I got the tapering all wrong.  I'm over it.  The space up for grabs.  If you want it, feel free to knock it down.  If you want help, I'll do my part to clean up my mess.
