Yeah. The lag keeps getting better all the time. I rarely have problems these days. I haven't tried boats in a while.

OK, well, for starters—Oh~h my~y Go~od!  I returned to spawn and the picture you supplied doesn't do your effort justice.  It's freakin' huge!  There's a double storage chest for each item, animals of every kind, a fully equipped enchantment library, 10 billion cauldrons, taking up but one eighth of an eighth of the available space you've hollowed, all within a hole the size of a crater reminiscent of the Yucatan Bay.
LOL @ Pam... if I had $20 for every time someone used that word with me... well....

I'd probably have like $60

Haha. Thanks. I really wanted to create a one stop shop for everything you'd ever need. The next level down will be a tree farm, under that a farm, and under that the animals. I haven't yet figured out how I'm going to walk all those animals down the stairs.

I wanted to stack potion stations over the enchantment stations, but I didn't know how to make potion stands.

I haven't really figured out sleeping yet either. I was originally thinking just a big bunk area, but I'm not sure I can 100% proof the area against mobs, or where they'd go anyway. You might have see the little shack I made within the central shaft. I think maybe we just all claim a corner and build our own private sleeping/storage areas. I'm wide open to different ideas though.

It's big.  It's scarily big.  I can't imagine what you're going to fill that space with.

So after collecting some more sand out at the largest desert and pimping out our "shack" with stone bricks, I decided to take a break and go off to do something new.  I, too, have another big project in mind and I wanted it to be far away.  The only problem is that I died last night when, after exploring an abandoned mine shaft (helloooo, new chunk!), a creeper snuck up on me and promptly did away with me.  And even if that one hadn't succeeded, there was another one right behind it.  I was toast.

So I spawned back at the bed you built near your enchantment library.  I didn't have the heart to go back to where I was.  I don't even know where I was.  I was halfway down to bedrock, designing a new, huge mine shaft.  Every time I build these things I update the design with what I think are better features.  I was making it larger to accommodate a central rail like you made for easy transport of stone and ores back to the surface.  Now we just need one of those fancy automatic storage facilities like the one I posted in a video early on in this thread.

Oh no. I hate that.

While you're gone, I'll keep collecting sand and gunpowder so the building of the temple will be fast when you get back.

While you're at spawn, I'm 100% done with that floor. So if you want to do anything to cover my cobblestone and random torches everywhere design, feel free. Now or ever. I'm just doing my best to make it work. I'm more than open to anyone coming along and making it pretty. Or if you have a layout that makes more sense, I'm open to that too.

It's big.  It's scarily big.  I can't imagine what you're going to fill that space with.

Long rows of double chests stacked up to four high. That whole level, other than the central shaft, is just storage.

That floor is designed to be 3 meters thick. It obviously isn't now, because even building out of cobblestone gets expensive. There some room to play with vertically though.

There's no rush on doing anything more with it. I was just letting you know I'm open to it.

If you're building remotely, you may just want to keep in mind that the roads run along 0x and 0z, and eventually on 5000x, -5000x, 5000z, and -5000z. The amusement park is somewhere around (100,y,-4000) so that it would be far away, but eventually be right on a major road. Mostly make sure I don't have to run a highway right through something pretty that you've built.

Yah, I already took that into consideration.  I also busted open GIMP and measured the distances.  I have a long way to go to extend the road past my tree to the new east.  The amusement park sits around -4200.  I'm currently building around x 1880, z 370.

They just released 1.1.

You can now enchant bows.

Also, Pianoman and I were just talking about this, when sheep eat grass, their wool grows back. Sheep farm concept is now viable.

Excellent!  Perhaps I should've waited a week to generate new chunks... but I didn't know how long it'd be 'til the update.  I'm interested to see what beaches look like.

Speaking of new chunks. I've yet to see any villages, so I checked the server settings. Generate structures is turned on, so they should pop up.

Awesomeness.

I put an hour in on the pit here and there, but I haven't been out of my hole in weeks. Give me a heads up when you're going to play, and I'll jump on if I'm open.

If I knew you were coming I would have made a little welcome chest like I did for Cider. Feel free to come to the second level of spawn and grab anything you need.

Found you!

Pianoman, building a road east and working on the temple to the west is not meshing well with my ADD. I got bored at spawn and brought some rock over to the road. Then I got bored with that and delivered some creeper guts to the temple. I might have spent more time walking than anything.

Backing up the server. Down for a bit.

Everybody that plays, when is a good time to meet for the one year anniversary Nether adventure? I have company from Feb 10-20. So preferably before or after that. Let's get some availability posted and plan this thing.

I was way off on Lanky's location. He's taken up residence in Pianoman's awesome tower south of spawn. I helped him clear out a ton of space under a hill for a while last night. I'm interested to see what it's going to be.

Lanky, if you follow that little road on top of the hill just a bit east, you'll come to the main road. Follow that north and it'll take you to the main spawn.

Spawn update: B1 (storage) is basically done. It should probably get a roof eventually, but I've never seen any hostile mobs drop in. I'm still open to design modifications for the ground floor which would effect the roof of B1. Also, if you want to place a bed and storage at spawn, I've left room at the center of B1, where the enchantment tables are. Just claim a corner and build what you need.

B2 (tree farm) is maybe a quarter done. It's still really dark where I haven't built, so be careful of mobs. There are plenty of trees growing though if you need wood.

B4 (farm), B5 (livestock), and B6 (colored sheep) have something like 75% of ceilings done, but not much else. Again, beware of mobs. If you need wheat in the meantime, there is a wheat farm just east of spawn between spawn and the giant tree. You can't miss the insane mine entrance. It's one of the first levels down.

B7 is where the Nether Portals are going. I've skipped down to this level in an effort to get it done for our adventure. I probably need just one or two good sessions to get the rest of the main floor in and a couple more to do the layout.

*edit*

VKC is back again. This time as Hroad. This has to be the richest 14 year old in the world, or he knows how to steal Minecraft accounts. I went through the list of every IP he ever logged in under and finally got frustrated and just banned the whole range. Anyone with better internetting skill want to let me know if I went too overboard? I think I did it right.

You banned VKC well; don't worry, I get ADD-bored too, and; hell yeah!  I forgot to mention I saw that you had dug down to bedrock.  It gave me a bit of wood.

I actually haven't played anything for a couple of weeks.  I've been busy with the business and being back at work.  In about 2 weeks I'll probably start to have some more free time, so it probably gels well with when your house guests leave on Feb 20.

Lanky: Yay!  You're playing on our server now.  How do you find the survival server?  Construction is much slower going but adventure is much more exciting when you can die!

P.S.  Which tower south of spawn?  I have built so many.  [edit] Ohhh, the one out near Ryan's base.

Okay. I have an okay idea of how ip addresses work. However, last time I messed I accidentally banned Greensteam from the forums.

Lanky, yes, you crashed the server. You crashed it hard. ...twice. What did you do‽ It looks like it ran out of memory. That's the third and fourth time that's ever happened. It seems to have booted again up just fine. Hopefully that's the end of it.

Late February is great for me. It'll give me more time to work on stuff. Our late nights seem to line up with your afternoons. If that works for Greensteam, I can forgo a good night's sleep here and there.

Fixed!

The map was corrupted. The customer support guy told me it's just a thing that happens sometimes. When I downloaded it and ran it, it worked find. It just won't go on multiplayer.

I ran a couple programs to try and fix it, but nothing worked. Luckily I had that couple day old save. I'm going to make a better habit of that.

Lanky, we lost anything from and after that night we played together. I did go back and redo most the work we had done, and I also fixed the tower. So actually, I think it's close to where we left off the other night. I don't know how much work you put in yesterday/today before it crashed. Hopefully not enough to be too disheartening.

aaand now it's 2am and I'm going to sleep.

Four men, clad in armor, laden with arrows, and brandishing the finest diamond swords step through the portal and into the nether.

What dangers await them there, in a place where even the landscape can be a mortal danger? How will they fare against swarms of grotesque zombie pigmen, phantasmal ghasts, or the rumored beings of living flame? Will our adventurers return victorious, replete with treasure, or limp home as broken men?

In a story that can only be written through your actions, the 2012 Lankyland Nether Adventure!

My cousins (13 and 15) have had a rough couple of years and have actually been split up. In my attempt to do my part to help them interact over long distances, I bought them each a copy of Minecraft.

I also invited them to our server. No one has ever done anything I'd consider inappropriate, but I'm just asking to be a little extra conscious if you ever see them on.

Fair enough.

IP blocking can be fun. What would be a good idea is to get an idea of what everyone's IP address are. Some folks will have dynamic IPs, others will have static. As long as you don't ban the range that any of the dynamic users are in then you should be fine.

Huh. You logged on like an hour after me. It was running fine for me. It looks like a similar error as last time. If it is, luckily I have it backed up to Sunday. I did a fair amount of work on Monday, but it wouldn't be a huge loss.

It looks like it's running now. I won't be home for a while to really test it. The little netbook they gave me at work doesn't have a video card. Let me know if you can't log in. I'll load up the backed up map when I get home if I have to.

Hmm. Maybe I backed up yesterday, not Sunday and maybe that screwed up the game while you were playing. I've been getting int he habit of doing back ups after big sessions, and you logged on right after I left. That might be all it was.

Also, I just found a village! It's at about -2000,2000, southwest of spawn. I was worried they weren't generating.

Also, also, do apples grow on trees now? One dropped on my head. I swear to god.

I backed up again last night.

Any thoughts on breaking up this massive thread into a subsection? I mean, leave this main general thread, but going forward break it up into topics. A temple thread, an road thread, a server back up thread, a server issue thread, etc... I'm perfectly fine with the way it is now, just floating the idea.

There are programs to locate strongholds and there are programs to ungenerate chunks. With your permission, I could locate where the strongholds were supposed to be, provided they don't have significant structures, ungenerate those chunks, and allow them to generate with strongholds.

I would then have to excuse myself from the search for them, but they would be there.

Also, there's a small chance that strongholds can still generate. They generate between something like 500-1000 meters from spawn. There were and I think still are many ungenerated chunks well within 1000 meters just northeast of spawn.

Seems a bit unfair for you not to have any joy of adventure seeking the new strongholds.  Perhaps breaking up the Minecraft thread into subsections would be a good idea.  In fact, I think it would be.

My cousin and I played for a while last night.

He did quite a number on Spawn while he was playing alone. He accidentally dug through the floor at one point and got stuck in the gap between the floor and the ceiling for the next level down. He knew how to dig, but not how to place blocks. His method for getting out was not pretty. I fixed the major stuff I found, but I'll have to go back and finish cleaning that up.

He's set up home in a tree just southwest of spawn. If you're at spawn you'll see it. I'm pretty sure the concept is an homage to Pianoman's tree. It actually serves as a pretty nice counterbalance. I think a ring of giant trees around spawn could be really cool.

I've been doing my best to teach him to be self reliant instead of just raiding spawn every time he needs something. I mean, anyone is welcome to what's at spawn, but it'll run out eventually. He now has an aerial chicken farm, and he just started a wheat farm too.

I'll bring him around to see the sights after he gets a little less pickax happy.

Lanky crashed the game again last night and I got around 70 calls from a 13 year old asking me to restart the server.

Ass.

That's pretty funny.  How is Lanky managing to crash the server so often?  Some kind of lag?

I was just listening to [noembed]the Minecraft song (by Bobby Yarsulik)[/noembed] on Youtube and it took me back to the very beginning.  Everything I came across in the game was new; we would have to stay indoors overnight to keep away from the monsters; I used to actually commute between my home and my worksite, which were a fair distance apart; the sight of iron excited me; I explored natural caves rather than digging mines.  I used to have a thing for beach houses.  I made heaps of them when I first started playing.

I'm not surprised he dug his way through spawn ;)  I don't mind spawn points being raided as long as their supplies are replenished by the raiders.  It's good that you're addicting your cousin to the game, though.

Okay. New theory, since blaming it on Lanky didn't work. There has to be a chunk error over where Lanky is playing. When I pull the map this weekend, I'll see if I can fix up around that area too.

I will set up a ticket system. Server goes down, lodge ticket. Phone calls to be ignored.

Ticket systems make people think that someone cares. I have a ticket system for lankyland, people think I care about them :-p

I walked all over the area Lanky was in and couldn't recreate it. I tried two things (How scientific. Way to track variables, asshole.):

I deleted Lanky's character file (Lanky mentioned his items sometimes change between the times he logs in.).

The banned ips ended up in the banned players text file (These glitches started the same time I did that.), so I moved them to the banned ips file.

If this doesn't fix it, I'll copy out the tower, reload the chunk, and see if that does it.

To muddy the waters even more. I went back on and walked around the tower where part of it had glitched out before. There was a visible performance lag when I crossed the line between chunks. Right on that line, there were leaves that were not decaying. I went up and chopped them away. The lag stopped. My crazy theory would be that something strange happened to the leaf entities and it was screwing up the whole chunk, but that might be a stretch.

Maybe we angered the nature gods and you placated them by removing the offending foliage.

That seems about as good an explanation as any right now.

Now Lanky says he can't interact with the world. I'm not sure what that means or even begin to guess why.

Is the glitching/lagging out gone? Or it it so laggy you can't do anything? Will it let you walk around, but interacting with bricks does nothing? Is it just the blocks right where you started?

Sounds like a lag or permission issue.  Either he's banned from altering the world or he's so lagged that his alterations time out before the server implements them.

I talked to Lanky. It sounds like it's finally working on his end. My guess was it was spawn point protection or just early chunk loading lag. Thanks for your patience. Sorry about all of that.

Either way, Lanky holds the award for the strangest server issue, the award for crashing the server the most often, and the award for crashing the server the hardest.

Those were just utility buildings while we built the lighthouse.

We finally took off in boats again. I let my cousin take the lead. He found a mushroom island in about 2 minutes. We've been camped out two islands over for days.

I grabbed two mushroom cows and the special mushroom dirt and I started an artificial mushroom island next to our little outpost. I'm going to keep making check points like that to make sure we get them back to spawn.

Nope. This is just to make my mushroom farm.

Finding the rarest biome in the game, enchanting a special tool to harvest the material, and leading mushroom cows all the way back seemed easier than figuring out a good torch layout.

o_0 :P  Of course.  More fun, at least.

I found jungle.  Damn, those ocelots are fast!  I was frustrated with my efforts on the Nether base, so I decided I needed a new perspective.  I was inspired to explore the Nether and I soon found a blaze spawner.  Unfortunately, I hadn't planned on staying alive… and a blaze subsequently helped me to keep to my plan.

After respawning in the overworld, I struck out northeast?  Past my tree and to the left from the spawn dome.  I took nothing with me and built it all up as I went along.  I was looking for a place to plant some seeds I'd harvested when I broke out of a pine forest and there, across the ice, was jungle.

I tried to use wooden slabs as fuel in my furnace.  They didn't burn :(  And you have to use a pick to tear apart slabs, regardless of what they're made of.  It's so illogical!

I just wanted to light the lighthouse.

Oh, god, what have I done?
I think you can now take the crown of Lava Tower King from me.  I never built anything that big and then poured lava all over it.

Jungle! That was on my list. Can you grab a few saplings for me?
Done!  I didn't realise, at first, that I was carrying jungle saplings.  I use the Painterly texture pack and I'm always tweaking my textures.  However, I can tell you that was already trying to grow these without any success.  Maybe they need to be in jungle surroundings?

By the way, I planted these near the birch trees underneath spawn.  I got confused about where you wanted the jungle sapling section.  The spawn base you're building is mind-bogglingly endless.  Especially the chasm that falls to bedrock (which I can't even see from the tree level).

P.S. You seem to have a chest for everything except... zombie flesh?
