EVENTUALLY.   Not at work.   I've been moved to a supposedly more private spot in the office only to realise I've got my back to 2 meeting rooms.  FML.

I am building a massive hole in one corner so that we can build a dinosaur without hitting the sky.

Hahaha.  No, we can build dinosaurs coming out of it.  What corner are you in?  Brick house, shitty lighthouse attempt, T-Rex, or pyramid?

re- dinosaurs.... there's a setting I can turn on that's related to "monsters".... hmmm

After reading through them, I think those settings are just for the other version of the game.

Why?  I had a go just playing around on the demo version last night and I was digging down into underground caves and creating elaborate tunnel systems and then deliberately flooding them.  It was fun!

Otter - you may need to purchase the game to use it, or you could use Super's login.
The website said something about only allowing one download place per login. Perhaps he meant IP restriction for each account?

Also....

WTFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!! Why didn't I know about this game?! I just found out about it from Good Game (gamer tv show here in Australia) and I had to buy it. It's now 11pm and I have to wake up at 6am to prepare for my Dad's wedding tomorrow.

It's awesome. It looked so awesome that I just bought myself a copy and I also bought a gifted version for my brother. I'm having SOOOO much fun with it. I also saw the video of that dude who made the Starship Enterprise in it. Epic stuff. Crazy time-consuming stuff. How the hell do you even execute something like that in-game?

Anyway, I hope everyone in the world gets this game. The dude who made it deserves his millions.

I know!! I only bought the game 2 days before its beta phase. I couldn't believe how fortunate I was to find the review when going back over old episodes of Good Games that I'd missed.

To be honest, I did look at the Minecraft website when you first posted about it, but it didn't draw me in. Not until I saw the TV review did I think that I had to have it.

*sigh* I've just found my first Redstone—and after reading about what it can do in the wiki, I'm floored.

Traps, mechanisms, and logic gates! This game has so much re-playability.

E.g. Someone very meticulous has created a 16-bit calculator:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6JqoE7MZEE

I also found an animal cannon the other day. It actually shoots animals. Very clever game design.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeV0XB-w_yM

And by popular demand, the fella who built the animal cannon launches himself!

OK, I just lost control of my bladder in the face of this person's awesomeness. They designed a semi-automated freight system and depot.

I reckon the calculator might make sense to anyone who understands binary, but I have no clue about that freight system. I don't even know how to begin trying to understand. The complexity of it gets me. It has eight bays, and if they're all full, the powered cart goes back to its resting place.

Did I see you say in an earlier post that you didn't like Survival mode? You guys were just playing on Peaceful with unlimited access to all the blocks? Like a giant Lego land?

I'm with Pianoman. I don't see any motivation to sell.

In the early days, he had a trial version of the survival mode. I thought it was just stupid and I was far more interested in the classic version.  That carried over at least a little into when we got Otter to put up that server.  I had to admitt that the new survival game was much better, but I was still in it for the classic mode.  However, the other day I started a new survival game.  I am officially hooked.  Wow.  There really is enough going on for a really great game.

Sandbox hasn't changed since it first launched.  I'll totally give you that it has a ton of original appeal, but there's only so long that it can hold you.  I started a second game on the survival game and I can't stop.  Probably 12 hours in the last three day.

...I need help.

Oops, sorry. I will admit that Hades was right, and I became a little addicted for a week or two. But I've got it under control now and I'm managing to keep up household chores and more ;)

Sorry, Superman. I didn't realise that the current Survival game is much better than it used to be. I just assumed you hated the idea of waiting for the sun to rise before you could continue building your visions. I'm building myself a castle and keep, with gardens, fountain and perhaps a chapel planned. I'll see if I can finish something worthy of a screenshot for you guys.

I'm strip mining durring the day.  At night I was building my tower (just finished), and I'm branch mining under my tower.  The night and day does a good job of breaking up my time so I don't get bored.

Now that I'm building something grand (all of my previous constructions were somewhat lacking), I really wanna share a proper Survival server with you guys.

I built a little shack next to my spawn point, mined a shaft all the way down to the bedrock and am also strip mining. It's yielding more diamond than I've found in previous games, where I just "mined around" and explored natural cave systems.

Have you visited the Nether yet? If not, then you're in for a treat.

P.S. I've attached a few screenshots of my construction.

P.P.S. I have to clear some rather large hills inside the area of my castle walls. It suddenly occurred to me as I drifted off to sleep last night that I could use TNT to blast them away instead of digging/mining them away. I had enough sulfur stored to create three blocks of TNT—and, hot dang, it's WAY fun. And much faster. So, I'll have to build a trap to catch creepers to feed me sulfur, so I've decided to visit the Nether to gather lava...

My future roommate had a server set up for a while.  I'm going to see if I can have him set up a classic server and a multiplayer survival server.  Hopefully whatever bugs there are will be fixed by then.

Also, I'm a huge fan of using tnt to blast away upper levels for stip mining.

Oops, I misunderstood what strip mining is. I meant I'm underground mining. I don't use explosives cuz I think there's a chance of destroying the minerals/ores.

I can't really take credit for the castle. It's inspired by this. I wanted to see how it would look, and it looks good. I'll be changing that front design to something of my own creation. I've been studying castles to understand what would make it authentic.

No.  I have some obsidian that I've farmed sitting just 20 blocks from my home base, but I'm nowhere near getting diamond, so I can't harvest it yet.

I'm still using mostly stone tools.  When I do get the occasional batch of iron, I use it to replace my sword and armor.  Those usually lasts me long enough to hit another vein and replace them again.  I'd love to be using iron tools until I hit diamond instead.

Did you guys know you can wear the pumpkins as helmets?  It doesn't seem to improve the armor by anything and it impairs your view a little, but it's still kind of cool.

Yes! Haha, I saw what it looked like on Youtube. It's funny, but on single player there's no point obscuring your vision.

I've attached my first attempt at a skin. Green hair with a white streak.

Apparently diamond is more common (or only appears?) in the deep. Also, I only use iron for steel picks (one at a time, until I lose them or they wear out), and armour. I use stone tools for everything, always. It's slower, but I prefer to hoard my iron, and diamond is just so rare. The only thing I've ever built from diamond is a pick to harvest obsidian. I did use it on normal stone for a while—it tears through stone like a shovel through dirt!—but when it does wear out (although it'll take a long time) I feel guilty that I wasted diamond on regular stone. Maybe if I find more diamond...

You can also create obsidian. It's actually never placed by the map generator, but created by natural circumstances afterward.

I'd love to use iron picks.  I just need to get to where there's more iron.  For now I just use iron for the armor and swords since ideally I won't use them much.

Yes, from what I understand you have to get pretty deep to normally find diamond.

That's what I meant about farming obsidian.  I had a couple lava pools just 10 or so blocks down right next to my base, so I made some obsidian out of it to mine later.  That way I have obsidian and my quarries won't fill with lava when I start digging them.

I gotcha. Strip mining does sound pretty cool. Just blowing up the land to harvest her goodies.

Btw, remember how you likened Minecraft to living in a Lego world? Check out Legopak.

I want you to visit The Nether! I want you to find out for yourself what it's like. You have to visit it on a setting where mobs will spawn. There's no point visiting an empty Nether on Peaceful setting.

P.S. I find heaps of iron... especially since I've only used about 30 ingots to make a whole buncha buckets and a couple of steel picks.

Well, you don't want to actually mine with the tnt.  It destroys too much of the material.  I just use it to help plow out hills so I can get some flat land.

The strip mining is making a 20X20 or so pit and stripping away one level at a time.

Riiiight? How freaking creepy is it? Did you venture into the open and get swamped? At first, it's like, "Oh, hello there big white thingy." Until it becomes, "Ahhhh, just lea-ea-ea-eave me alone  :'("

Try building something there. It's a bloody pain.

You'd better hurry up and find some diamond to gather that obsidian, Superman!

Oh, by the way, remember how someone built a calculator in Minecraft? Pfft, apparently that was nothing. Why not build an entire CPU with RAM and other computey stuff I no understand?

Anyway, I just deleted my world. It was favourite world to date, but I didn't like the castle. It's not me. I'm going to design something myself. I'm thinking the home of Queen Galadriel and her elves from The Lord Of The Rings.

You'd be surprised how many players think it's perfectly fine. I asked because while I find lots of iron, I don't really seem to find a lot of creepers (green explodey guys). I really wanna make lotsa TNT but it's an agonising wait.

I try to avoid going out at night when I can.  Zombies, creepers, and even spiders in small numbers are okay, but as soon as I hear the skeleton's bow, I run inside as fast as I can.

I have had a few run ins with creeper surprise attacks though.  Never ever get close to a wall with a ledge above you at night.  Those creepers jump down on you and explode before you ever know they're there.  It happened once in my new quarry (Pictures soon, I promise.) that I foolishly thought was deep enough to deter attacks and again when I stupidly decided I couldn't wait to go do some cosmetic repairs to my outer wall.  They jump off the ledge right on your head and it might be the scariest thing ever.  Just as you hear the hiss and are about to spin around, *boom*, dead.

I mostly collect sulfur in the early mornings.  The zombies and skeletons are just catching fire and you can collect their loot, the spiders leave you alone, and there are usually a few creepers out.  It's light out so they're easier to see and they don't have any other monsters to team up with, so they're easier to pick off.  I try to stage the fight on a hill I'm trying to demolish anyway, so if I screw up and don't get the loot, at least they blast a hole in the hill.

I think I've made about 5 blocks of tnt so far, so that averages out to 25ish successful kills.  Seems about right.  Like I said, it's really only good for blasting away the top dirt or maybe the top few levels of stone to expose lower levels.  It destroys most of the collectible material in the blast, so you don't want to use it on any ore.

Spiders seem to remain aggressive towards me until well after the skeletons and zombies have finished burning. I really want to make a monster harvesting centre. The forums are a bit of confusing, but I think I have a reasonable idea of how to build one.

Yeah, those guys on the minecraft forums have some really elaborate ideas. I can't usually figure out what exactly they're describing.

I was thinking about that. There must be some algorithm that figures out how to make circles at a pixilated level.  My only thought on how to calculate it for now is to open up a photoshop doc, zoom all the way in, make a circle, and then count out how they do it.

Yeah, I do the same thing to make a circle... someone put a nice guide up on the forum for how to make circles of different radii, which could be layered to make a sphere or part thereof.

You can make diagonal/curved structures, but so far all of mine have looked too weird for me to be happy with. I'm not yet ready for the super-gigantic constructions that make curves look good, either.

I haven't tried it yet, but that's what I came with while lying awake at night thinking about Minecraft.

Can you link that formula here?  I like that better than my idea.

No diamond, yet.  I'm maybe 20 levels down.  Getting there.  I'm going to put in some time in tomorrow.

I've been trying to find the circle-making guide, but the search function isn't working and I have no idea where I found it—… wait…

Aw, dang, I'm a knob-end. I saved it to my desktop. I've attached it here for ya. Looks like someone took the time to make it easier to read what one might whip up in a Paint-type program.

Anyway, for me to find diamond so quickly, I mined straight down to the bedrock and then search off to the sides.

Holy crap, that's the prettiest mining pit I've ever seen. You really just mine everything out of there! All those torches… I take it you have no problem finding enough coal. I've switched to using wooden planks to fuel my furnaces, since coal is a finite resource. Although, given coal's availability, it's probably a precaution I don't need to take… I just tend to hoard resources in any game that I play.

I've had a few different ideas for lighthouses, but I'm intent on designing one that hasn't been done before. The nicest one I've seen, which surprises me because it's very square, was a recreation of the Lighthouse of Alexandria (attached). I'm thinking of an ivory (cotton or snow) upstretched arm, with a single lava spring spiralling down to the sea. I've also had this urge to build my vision of Belgarath's tower (from The Belgariad).
