Yeah, I've read through the forums. There's just some basic OS installation stuff I'd like to do that I need some hand on help with. Like I said, I got the server software up and running and I could log in and access the control panel remotely, it was just running on a shell so it had half the memory it needed.
Ah, I see. Well, no rush. It's cool that you can set a dedicated server. Lemme know if I can help out.
Back to the Nether: lol. I can empathise. Remember how I said I too was on a floating island, which luckily had a narrow pathway to more substantial land? Well, it turns out that the ghasts blasted so much of the Netherrack around my portal that they opened up enough land beneath that in the Nether for a newer, perhaps more correlated in space. This meant that the next time I returned, all the furnaces, storage and workbench I'd left near the first portal were wayyyy above me. I had to tower back up from some seriously reshaped land. It's so hard to judge distance when everything looks the same.
Anyway, I've learned a few things about surviving in the Nether.
1) Stay out of sight: tunnel through the land. Tunnel anywhere to get out of sight of ghasts. Just tunnel, tunnel, tunnel.
2) Build with stone: ghast fireballs can't destroy it.
3) Once you've established a base of safety, replace some of your stone walls with glass for optimum viewing.
I haven't spent much time there, though. It's not easy survive when ghasts can destroy the very land around you so readily. I don't have much luck hitting their fireballs back at them, either, but with some practice, it'd be the most awesome way to travel through the Nether.
