Yeah, I need to start farming trees soon.  My area around my base was already tundra.  Now I've clear cut the few stands of trees I did have.

No, Super needs to find 3x diamond ore blocks before he can fashion a diamond pick to mine the obsidian.

Hey Super, you'd be surprised at how quickly you can create a tree farm. A lot of saplings drop from trees that you've cut down. If you plant them all, harvest and repeat they get plentiful quickly. I'm kinda going for something different. I wanna create an enchanted forest, with extra tall trees and a proper living canopy.

That Colloseum is incredible. THOSE guys have a lot of time dedicated to Minecraft. It seems that the nicer stuff is created by teams of people, which is why I'd love to try a server.

Funny that you mentioned tree farming again.  Mass deforestation has finally forced me to tree farm.  I just finished building my farm and was coming here to show it off.

I set aside a 20X20 square, checkered it with saplings a torches, threw a roof on it 8 spaces up, then I put a wheat farm on the roof.  The wheat farm is up high enough that no mob can get up, and the waterfall wall created from the irrigation makes sure no mobs can get into the tree farm.  The whole thing can be operated any time of day with no interruption.

That's elegantly beautiful, but wouldn't harvesting wheat be a little difficult without trampling your tilled soil? I love the look of your waterfall walls. I saw a water palace on Youtube today using the same walls as your tree farm and I've been inspired to try something like it in the future. There are so many possibilities.

It's such a bitch to build anything with the monster interruptions. It's nice when I can finally get a perimeter up to keep them out of my construction sites.

I'll show what I'm trying to create. I hope it turns out nicely. Tell me what you think and whether it gives you any ideas.

I'm not sure how to prune the extra tall trees, and I might remove all of the lower foliage altogether for the forest outside of the tree home. I basically just waited for a bunch of planted saplings to grow, then I cut into the canopy directly above each trunk, placed a dirt tile and planted another sapling. Some of the trees are 2x trees high and a couple of them are 3x trees high.

Oooo, that's fun.  Trees always contuse me, so I put that ceiling on them for easy harvesting. I like that you're getting really creative with them, but I wouldn't know the first thing about it.

I mostly walk through the channels when I'm farming, and I crouch when I have to walk over the actual tilled land.  Do you have a better layout idea?

Danke… I think it'll look awesome when it's a real forest.

As for farming, my first farm was two wheat fields wide and next to a path. That way it was pretty quick and easy to harvest without having to spend much time sneaking/crouching so as not destroy the tilled land. A more efficient farm is probably the second picture, because (according to the Minecraft wiki) wheat will grow faster when it has two other wheat tiles on either side of it. Also, apparently water will hydrate four tiles next to it, even diagonally. The gravel is just for me—I really like the way gravel pathways look.

P.S. More pictures from the Age Of Mining server. I'm constantly amazed by what these guys produce.

How do you harvest the square one without trampling the ground?  I think mine is about as easy.  I am up for fixing it though.  Pigs are abundant and heal just as much, so farming is more just to do it than out of any real need like with tree farming.

These guys figured out how to use the Kinect to take a 3D picture and recreate in in Minecraft.  Soooo awesome.

Also, Notch said he thinks Minecraft will officially launch later this year.

When you sneak, you don't destroy tilled soil, but I wouldn't do the large square farm because I'd have to spend too much time sneaking. I liked my first one because even the wheat adjacent to the water will usually jump into your inventory, even if you're still on the pathway.

That's a very cool use for the Kinect, but it seems relatively simple: match each tile to a group of colours and then let the Kinect place those tiles in Minecraft. It's the interaction between the two that I like. Now that we know they can work with each other, it gives hope for actually using the Kinect to play Minecraft directly. Imagine fighting off a skeleton and then hastily assembling a base, running around dumping dirt before a creeper arrives!

I just spent a bit going through that thread you linked.  Wow.  That's some amazing stuff.  I'll never have that kind of time.

I am currently rebuilding my base in the most impractical way I could think of.  I replaced all of my dirt walls with glass, and built a second glass wall around the base with one space in between the two walls and a glass trench between them.  Then, I'm pouring lava in between the two walls.  So when I'm done, I'll hopefully have a lava wall that you don't have to be afraid of getting too close to.  I only have 5 or 6 source blocks so far, but it already lights up the house and surrounding area more than my torches ever did.

I really want to build a floating island base, but I think I'll wait until we have a multi server set up.

Also, I just remembered I first created my farm to look like tiered fields. Every eight squares I dropped the ground by one tile and started another water channel with adjacent fields. It had a nice cascading look to it :)

I look forward to your lava house—it sounds awesome. Think of the extra warmth :P
If you're curious, there's lots of lava in The Nether ;)

I think lava is only one lux greater than a torch, but I also think it seems much brighter. Maybe it's because lava will flow and light up more squares, whereas we wouldn't really place four torches in a line like that to light things up.

I keep getting new ideas for things to build and only half complete anything I start. I will finish my tree home and enchanted forest, though.

So, we're really gonna get our own server set up???

So, we're really gonna get our own server set up???

Otter had a classic server set up for us before Beta was out and multi was supported for survival.  The guy I'm moving in with had one set up for a while but took it off.  We've actually been discussing setting up a dedicated box in our apartment for just Minecraft.  We both have potential boxes sitting around that might work really well.

I have no idea how you mine like that without going crazy. It is admittedly hard to find diamond. You have a lot of torches up there, my friend ;) I've heard that diamond and lava can more commonly be found near each other, but I haven't really found that to be true. Anecdotally, I'd say that natural cave systems are easier to use to search for resources. Perhaps it's like that on purpose.

Have you tried using a different texture pack? I really like how some of them look. I tried editing the texture of cobblestone last night, because it's just so ugly that I don't build with it. It's not so easy to come up with an awesome texture that tiles well. However, I was able to come up with some smooth textures that tiled well. I just don't know if I'd be happy to change cobblestone to a smooth texture—I mean, it's cobblestone. It's supposed to look uneven. It would save me a lot of energy spent smelting cobblestone back into smooth stone for building.

In particular, I wanna try the "betterlight" mod. It gives very realistic looking shadows. I also like the mods that colour an entire grass tile green, rather than just green on top with dirt on the side. A hill would normally be covered in grass, so I'm more comfortable with that edit.

Minecraft has sold one million copies. There's a site called http://onemillionminecrafters.net/ where you can upload your avatar and it gets put alongside everyone else who's uploaded theirs. There are A LOT.

Meh. I'm not a huge fan of the mods I've seen. Though, I don't see anything wrong with texture packs. Some are actually really, really nice. I guess I'm still really satisfied with the game as is and don't see any need to change anything.

Also, here's the beginnings of my diamond mine. That top one is 20 rows up from the bottom which I is where I understand diamonds start appearing.

I was in the nether for a bit, but died right away and lot all the buckets I was going to use to smuggle lava back in. I had to go back to mining again to get more iron for more buckets.

Your mine looks awesome. Also, I see that you're making good use of mine carts. I still haven't built any, so I have plenty of iron. I like the game, too. I just hate the look of cobblestone, although it looks nice when used as an accent in smooth stone constructions.

Hehehe, so how long did you last in The Nether? Ouch for the buckets. The very first time I visited, I was fortunate enough to enter in a cavern with plenty of land around. This time, I entered in the worst bloody place—a narrow platform suspended high above the ground below. It didn't take long for me to start getting hammered. Now, the Nether around where I entered is completely changed by all of the fireballs. It's like a huge crater.

Yeah, mine carts are awesome.  It saves me tons of time walking up and down. You get 16 sets of track for each six chunks of iron. It seems like a lot, but they add up really fast.

I spent maybe 10 minutes in the nether. I was trying to dig a nice safe path down to the lava, but the ghasts kept shooting their fire balls at me and I got rushed and I opened up a straight drop right over a pool. It was a dumb mistake that I'd have never made normally.

Minecraft Beta 1.2
Minecraft Beta 1.2 is live. All servers need to be updated to 1.2.

New features:
* Note blocks (right click to tune, trigger to play)
* 15 wool dyes
* A new water dwelling mob
* New tree types
* Reeds magically turned into sugar canes. They still make paper.
* A bunch of new crafting recipes
* One secret useful block
* One secret pretty block
* Cake
* AND MOAR, probably. I forget!

Bugfixes:
* Paintings work in multiplayer
* Disconnecting while riding no longer keeps the player in the world
* A bunch more state is properly synched in multiplayer
* Fixed colors going weird on PowerPC
* Fixed a horrible chunk reload loop in singleplayer
* Fixed most lighting bugs in newly generated SMP maps
* Falling sand behaves better in SMP
* Fixed a few crash on load level bugs

*
It just launched like 10 minutes ago and people are already reporting in. (And it keeps coming in.  I'm just going to keep updating this guy as I hear about new stuff.)

Sounds like flowers can be used as dye along with squid ink.

Also there are now black sheep and it sounds like their wool can be bleached with bone meal made from dropped bones from skeletons.

People are posting pictures of lighter and darker tree trunks.

Logs can be turned into coal with a furnace.

Spiders can climb walls. Oh god.

Sand can be combined into sandstone.

You can dye sheep.

The distance light travels decreases the deeper you are underground.

A dispenser? It sounds like you can load it up with arrows and activate it with redstone to shoot the arrows back out.  Maybe a pressure plate and set up some automated defenses?

Yeah, mine carts are awesome.  It saves me tons of time walking up and down. You get 16 sets of track for each six chunks of iron. It seems like a lot, but they add up really fast.

I spent maybe 10 minutes in the nether. I was trying to dig a nice safe path down to the lava, but the ghasts kept shooting their fire balls at me and I got rushed and I opened up a straight drop right over a pool. It was a dumb mistake that I'd have never made normally.
I was watching (and will continue to watch) someone setting up a minecart (a.k.a train) station. Oh my fricking God, I'm so lost. He's actually much easier to understand than most of the knobs who put a video up on Youtube, and he spends the right amount of time on each part. It's just so complicated for me. I'm not a logical person most of the time, so logic gates are confusing me so much :(

10 minutes? That's a whole day! You did well. It took me a while to realise that you have to move around The Nether out of the sight of ghasts. The first time I went, I ended up tunnelling over to where I saw some glowstone, which was quite far away. Then, I built cobblestone walls around it and straight up. It took me forever to harvest that glowstone. Upon reflection, I quite like that The Nether puts such pressure on you. The normal world in daytime is extremely calm, but The Nether just never—gives—up!

Oh my god, Oh my god, oh my god!!! Notes! Playable notes! I think I just wet my pants.

Actually, I'm glad. A couple of the updates were things I had thought of suggesting but never got around to: new tree types; sand combining to form sandstone.
I wonder what the secret blocks and the new crafting recipes are!

You don't need a station or logic gates or any of that crap.  I just have a track straight from my base to the bottom of the quarry.  I ride a cart down, and then I have a powered cart push four carts full of stuff back up.  Cuts way down on the time to get down and I get to carry more than twice as much stuff back up.

The infinite boosters don't seem very complicated, though. The logic gates are just for super-duper systems that dispense carts as you need them.

Have you seen water ladders? Very cool. Fastest way to move straight up.

The water ladders are a great idea. One guy had a 1X2 pit straight down to the bedrock. One column of air and one of gravel. Then he had a pool of water at the top with the gravel column separating it from the open column. He jumped in hi boat and jumped straight down the shaft. Then at the bottom, he knocked out the bottom piece of gravel to let water into the hole at the top and rode the water back up.  Just genius.

Yeah. Recent videos showed me that you don't even need to travel in a boat, meaning that from the top you can just fall all the way down to the bottom, provided you have 3x water blocks depth to cushion your fall. However, there was one video I found on the forum that used a boat in a 2x2 pit. It looked more like an elevator.

When I started playing I was determined to figure everything out for myself. However, after my first night running from everything in the dark, I realised I needed a helping hand, so I watched paulsoaresjr's tutorial (embedded in the Minecraft website's Help page). He suggested carving out a small hidey-hole in a hill with an entrance that you could then plug up with dirt, leaving one block of air open so you could see when the sun arises.

Now, I either carve a hidey-hole, or build myself a 3-block high wall out of dirt or sand and get to work at my crafting bench for the first night.

Agreed. I also like my new mining technique of using a mine shaft to get to the goodies deep down in the earth, so on my second day I look around for a neat location where I can dig down. It's nice to build a skylight for it and have the sun shine right down to the bedrock.

I'm going to have to learn some circuitry. These dispensers are awesome at shooting arrows.

UPDATE: perhaps the dispenser can only shoot through solid blocks placed to the South or West of the dispenser, i.e. it's a glitch. There are some other things that have broken.

- new worlds can be very laggy, may correct itself after 10-15mins
- minecart track lays East-West first, but doesn't properly align North-South if you try to build so
- random forest fires starting without being ignited by above-ground lava

Very cool. I never bother with a skin, because I never play in F5.

I was thinking of starting a new world to generate some of the new stuff, but I've never been very far from home base anyway, so I won't have to walk far to generate some new chunks.

I went wood harvesting at night in my "monster proof" arboretum at night. In the trees. The spiders are in the trees. Oh god.

Just dig out a hole and close yourself in until morning. You can just wait out the night for the first few nights. You don't have to build anything pretty the first day.

I checked the specs on the box I want to use it seems like it'll be more than sufficient. I've done some research and I think I found the software set up I want to use. I'm going to do some trials this weekend and see how it goes. If I get to that stage, would you mind being my overseas tester, Pianoman?

Yayyy. I might be out for most of this weekend, though. What city are you in, so I can figure out times?

Very cool. I never bother with a skin, because I never play in F5.
I almost never do either, but I can always see my right hand.

As for spiders, yeah... There I was, happily waiting out the night in my enclosure, reading the forum, when I hear "Ou! Oo! Oh! Aa!" and I'm like, hey, that's me getting hurt! Yep, a friggin spider had scaled the wall. I don't know how, since they're only supposed to climb the wall if they can see you.

I hadn't moved very far in my old map, either, but I was seeing no squids, so I figured I might as well start anew. There are definitely more flowers and plenty of passive animals. I quite like the new trees, as I can use them to prettify my place. I'm happiest with the return of coloured cloth, so I can warm my home up with carpeting.

I totally want to see rain in this Minecraft.

I think the spiders just climb around the same way they used to just walk around, only now also vertically.

Also, they spawn in the trees!!!

Monsters already spawned in trees, though. I saw it all the time.

Sydney's currently at GMT +11, so you're 18 hours behind moi, meaning... that at 10:00am here, it's 4:00pm there?
You're not ready for testing yet, though, are you.. so just lemme know.

*sigh* There needs to be a good way to navigate through a Minecraft world. It's so easy to get lost. Maybe that's the point, and that if I really want to find my way home then I should build lighthouses.

I'm not even close to ready. I'll tinker with it tonight when I get home. I'd love to have it up tonight already, but I wouldn't count on it.

Well, the spawn point isn't so much of an issue, since one can build a compass which always points towards the spawn point. However, if one were to explore for a while, settle, and set off once again for exploration, how would you find your way back? Like you say, towers, directional assistance. Actually, that's not so bad an idea. Random crossroads with signs. OMG that's so cool!

Well, I've cancelled my plans for today cuz it's wet and I'm working from home anyway, so I have many hours ahead of me with which I can use to test your server. I'm excitement!!

Okay. It's not happening this weekend. I did get it to install, interface remotely, and set conditions for worlds. However, I can't get worlds to start up. I have a feeling that running the server software on a virtual machine is messing it up. I'm going to do a full linux install on that box and try again later.

So, at least I know the hardware works and I know how to get it up and running. Just give me a couple weeks to get moved in and get live in tech support.

Most people seem to have embraced the idea. There are a few who intensely dislike it and are whinging on the forums.

It doesn't bother me. I don't mind making it a bit harder. And then, anyone who wants a real challenge can go and live in The Nether. Fuck that place. Seriously. I want its lava. Have you ever gotten up close to a ghast? They're bigger than you think.

Fuck the Nether. Fuck it so hard. I turns out my portal is on a floating island, which explain why I'm having suck a hard time getting to the lava. I can just barely make the jump down to a normal chunk, but I can't live long enough to build a bridge back up.

Yeah, I've read through the forums. There's just some basic OS installation stuff I'd like to do that I need some hand on help with. Like I said, I got the server software up and running and I could log in and access the control panel remotely, it was just running on a shell so it had half the memory it needed.

Ah, I see. Well, no rush. It's cool that you can set a dedicated server. Lemme know if I can help out.

Back to the Nether: lol. I can empathise. Remember how I said I too was on a floating island, which luckily had a narrow pathway to more substantial land? Well, it turns out that the ghasts blasted so much of the Netherrack around my portal that they opened up enough land beneath that in the Nether for a newer, perhaps more correlated in space. This meant that the next time I returned, all the furnaces, storage and workbench I'd left near the first portal were wayyyy above me. I had to tower back up from some seriously reshaped land. It's so hard to judge distance when everything looks the same.

Anyway, I've learned a few things about surviving in the Nether.
1) Stay out of sight: tunnel through the land. Tunnel anywhere to get out of sight of ghasts. Just tunnel, tunnel, tunnel.
2) Build with stone: ghast fireballs can't destroy it.
3) Once you've established a base of safety, replace some of your stone walls with glass for optimum viewing.

I haven't spent much time there, though. It's not easy survive when ghasts can destroy the very land around you so readily. I don't have much luck hitting their fireballs back at them, either, but with some practice, it'd be the most awesome way to travel through the Nether.

This is the best implementation of note blocks that I've seen so far. It's Billie Jean and it has pretty good timing.

I'm going to think about my physical travels in terms of musical terms all day now.

Refrigerator, stove, repeat, refrigerator, stove, repeat, refrigerator, stove, and final ending, dining room.
LOL! True, yes, that signage was pretty cool ;) He probably designed it out of convenience, but in retrospect it is quite elegant. He actually used physical distance to represent rests because it's more accurate than stop-starting runs in-game. Very well... if that's what impresses you... I shall design something most awesome.
LOL @ Pam... if I had $20 for every time someone used that word with me... well....

I'd probably have like $60

I've been thinking about multiplayer beta. ...a lot.

What do you think about establishing a uniform transit system? Maybe not for everything, but at least for N, E, S, W roads. Here's a few features I was thinking of.
- I'm assuming making it out of cobblestone only makes sense.
- Raised a few blocks to accommodate boat travel.
- Two cart lanes. One for towards the spawn, one for away. We'll have to fight over whether traffic keeps right or left.
- Water lane? I don't know if that's a good idea or a cool idea. Maybe neither.
- Distance markers. Some sort of easily identifiable marking for every hundredth meter. A line of wood instead of stone? Also, a sign telling you how far you are from the spawn. Signs on uniform sides of the road facing a uniform direction.
- A different material on the right or left of the road so you always know if you're heading towards or away from the spawn.

Here's what I was thinking it'd probably look like.
C=Cobblestone
U=Whatever else is most abundant
T=Track
S=Sign

Wow, that is specific. I love it.

Of course, traffic keeps to the left. LOL, no, I don't care. I like that you've allowed some space between the tracks, in case we need it in the future.

I love water travel. I don't know if we'll need a water lane once we develop a rail system. At the very least, raising the tracks a few blocks to allow boats to pass when needed is an absolutely awesome idea.

I will not lie—I hate the look of cobblestone-only constructions. I like cobblestone-accented constructions. Could we pretend we're master stonesmiths who can easily smelt cobblestone back into smooth stone?

Also, is one block considered one metre? So 100 blocks = 100 metres?

Yeah, I was thinking maybe ultimately doing this.

The nice thing is you can always build it out of the simplest materials to start and add to it as you go. Speaking of, maybe it should be even taller, so we can build under it for things like supporting canals. So you could ultimately end up with something like this.

(Vertical cross section)

T=Track
C=Main building material
U=Secondary building material
B=Water
G=Glass
A=Lava
_= Sea level

If you mine the coal, I'll gladly leave you chests full of cobblestone to smelt.

Also, is one block considered one metre? So 100 blocks = 100 metres?

That's what I was assuming. I think someone must have planted the idea of equating blocks to meters in my head. I don't remember where I read it though.

I've heard metres mentioned many times in videos or on the forums. I can only assume they mean 1M = 1 block.

P.S. I've attached your description as a graphic. Like-a-dat?

I could probably smelt all that stone ;)

That's quite cool. It'd look very civilised, considering the natural setting of Minecraft. Do you think the water canal should be two metres wide to avoid side collisions? We would have to cut into any mountains in our way. Very nice.

And yeah, I probably would smelt all of that stone. I hate cobblestone that much.
