You fellers are obviously hardier than me.  Both you and Lanky have complained about losing high levels but I… I don't live much past 4.  Are you making an effort to attain high levels for enchanting purposes?  I really need to get into it.  It sounds very interesting.

Notch recently stated in a discussion with Chris Hecker (creator of Spy Party) that he regrets ever adding half blocks to Minecraft.  What do you think?

Notch regrets adding half-blocks because all it did was double the amount of verticality in the game and undermined the overall cube aesthetic. He also regrets not beginning work on multiplayer earlier so the process could have been smoother

I don't use half blocks a lot but I would definitely miss them if they disappeared.  I use them for a nice design aesthetic.  There is a mod that allows you to split blocks into smaller pieces (8 mini-cubes per normal cube).  I thought that mod would allow for some excellent designs.

I agree. Multiplayer is the heart of the game. It's too bad it's still so buggy.

I get where's he's coming from on half blocks. I personally like them, but I agree that it sort of changes the base of the game.

On my current Minecraft agenda are:
— signing off on my own design for the 5k point I staked out (east of spawn)
— creating an adventure for you guys
— finishing the story and pictures for the adventure that Superman created for greensteam and myself.

Not to mention the completion of the temple… I'm going to have to pull some serious time fetching sand again.

My cousin and I have gone even further south (and I think east). He brought me some hand drawings of some buildings he wants to make. I guess there's something innately more fun about starting something new. Hopefully building this far away will help teach him a little more about what it takes to gather the supplies for large projects. I might hold off on extending the nether road out to there.

Yes, yes and yes.  Your cousin is now sketching drawings for his Minecraft ideas.  Yes!

Yes, there is just something special about starting a new project.  It has the potential to be fantastic.  Sometimes we get it right.

Yes, it's best for your cousin to fend for himself (at least a little bit.  I dunno, the youngens might not be interested in fending for themselves.)  I let Lanky do his own hard work.  I didn't want to rob him of the pleasure doing new Minecraft things for himself.  E.g. I could've brought him seed for his new farm but instead showed him how to get seed for himself.

We're currently digging a giant pit that will serve as the foundation for whatever it is this kid wants to build. It turns out that we're on wolf island and the pit getting getting flooded with them. Yes, of course I hit one and just barely made it out of the pit alive.

The mine I'm currently working out of is also situated in a wolf biome.  I love it.

While I was sick I met Vaati.  Likeable.  I also run into lanky and bx83 a bunch when playing.  Not literally, though.  I'm seven kilometres from them.

Vaati has built a mob grinder near spawn that would give enough gunpowder to take down the Temple mountain in a few days. It's pretty awesome.

I just saw on the map what you were talking about. That thing is disgusting. Why do those idiots have to build that ugly shit right on top of spawn?

He does have a really kick ass underground one right next to that. That's what I was talking about, not that big ugly thing.

Someday, when they're more wrapped up in other things, I'm tearing down all of that ugly cobblestone crap.

Ongoing projects:
Road - Still working on it. Lots of work down heading east and west.
Spawn - Tons of work done. Further from done than other. The more I do, the more I think to add.
Temple mountain destruction - Oh crap. I forgot. I want to build a mod grinder into Spawn to collect enough sulfur. Oh crap. Another thing for Spawn.
Sand delivery to temple - The system is (was) set up. Need to repair the rail and just do the hard work now.
Amusement Park Phase II - Started then promptly abandoned for the time being.
Nether Road to 5k - Roughed in. Not sure how much exactly, but needs a lot of work. You should be able to get to all 8 5k points though.
Miscellaneous Nether roads (Throw a request in the nether thread and I'll get to it eventually.) - Still willing. I think I have everything I wanted done.
Village 1 - Meh. Done with it.
Village 2 - I'll add more to it when I think of more ideas. Right now there's just some major landscaping I'm in the middle of.
Villager distribution - Success! Villagers are at Spawn and ready to be delivered anywhere the rails run.
Spawn area tree houses - Nothing done sine I made this list.
Lighthouse Island - Ugh. Still a lava mess as far as I know.
Bring back mushroom cows - Success!

Planned projects:
North 5K Point (I think I want north) - Not even close to starting.

I think I started a year after you, around October 2010, then. Wow. I've never played any game this much. There's something awesome about playing a fresh game with other people. I think I should get off my butt and buy the parts for my new computer. Then you won't be able to resist the lure of Minecraft, because you'll be so jealous that I'm having all the fun.

Hey hey, good to see you.

Umm, my "good" computer is taking a break. I can probably do a back up on here. I'll try to get it this weekend. Have they patched the release yet? I like to let them get a patch or two out of the way, and they usually have a couple right away.

I don't think it works that way anymore. I'm pretty sure you can set it to any version you want. I think what you just described happened far too often.

Who broke my castle door?!

I'm going to rebuild the mechanisms, it's too fragile in it's current form.
Using the lever twice too quickly, or even a badly times lag spike can break it.

And yeah, you can launch essentially any version from the launcher, that's fantastic!

Also, there are always going to be bugs.
I want the new stuff! =D

Haha. True, but I understand Superman's reluctance. Some bugs have crashed our server or deleted part of our map.

Yeah that's fair enough. There's so much that's been built and half-built....it would be crushing to loose it.

Minecraft is work. It's the best work. Can we get paid to Minecraft?

I'm just backing up at work. Hopefully no one will notice.
I once downloaded a 3GB game at work because I'd run out of bandwidth at home.

Only 3 gig? I think in one day I've pulled down over 25 gig of stuff through a work connection. It was all vaguely work related, mostly ISOs for various Operating Systems that I was interested in trying out.

Yeah. There was something broken with our map and it screws up the process. As soon as I get a computer up and going, I'll try to fix it and render it again.

Hey, back again. Gonna be hitting up the server again after a brief hiatus. Lots of stuff going on at home getting in the way.

Anyway, yay!

Also, when will the server be updated?
And did we ever get that new map capture?

Yay, welcome back!

My hiatus… has been a year now? However, now that my fiancee has recently finished up her casual work, we are both unemployed and I figure it's a good time to spend up big and build a computer that can run Minecraft.

For the time being, I've been playing FTL.

You gotta come back, it's kinda lonely, wandering the deserted roads and seeing the deserted buildings and farms left to ruin...
It's kinda like a post-apocalyptic land, long after everyone has died and nature has reclaimed most of it.

Well no more!
My castle is going swimmingly, and it will soon make the jump to citadel. Very exciting!

Citadel? Fancy. That sounds very grand. Post some pictures?

Haha, I'm sorry… I didn't realise I'd been gone for so long. It's almost scary to think that I started playing Minecraft about 4 years ago. It would be extremely cool if nature actually started to reclaim our constructions. I miss my temple. It was my grandest vision and I feel guilty that I never completed it. I spent a LOT of time harvesting sand for that thing and it's not even one fifth complete.

yes yes you must come back!
I find when i have a huge project, other people being on the server drives me on to complete it.

Often my ideas outstrip what's feasible for one person to complete quickly. But you gotta dream big!

The temple was a far bigger dream than anything I'd previously done, and I found that I would wander off to do other smaller constructions, like when I worked on the Nether base.

My first adventure was the most fun one. I set off, before Minecraft had compasses or beds, with some building supplies, and seeded a bunch of watch towers. It was a lot more hair-raising when the prospect of death and getting lost meant you might never find them again. I actually was approaching death at one point, and I was lost in the snow. I had headed off in the vague direction I thought was home, but I wasn't recognising any of the landmarks. I tell you, when I saw Superman's snow tower loom up at me in the distance, it was probably one of the finest Minecraft experiences I've ever had.

It was perhaps the most relief I've felt in a game.

I've had a few such moments.

Minecraft is full of little moments like that.

In fact just recently, i went through the nether trying to find the right portal to get to Spawn Temple from my base.
I clearly went the totally opposite direction, because when i emerged from the portal i was in an unlit cave. Did a little exploring, found diamond, coal, gold, iron and redstone. Found my way to the surface. It turned out the cave was under a vast ocean. juuuuust made it to the surface without dying from drowning. There was a mountain in view so i swam to it. I was fairly sure i wouldn't survive the swim back down to the cave.

Made it to what i thought was a mountain island, turned out to be an outcropping overlooking valleys of stone.

Stupidly i had neither compass nor a map, and night was rapidly approaching, so i dug a hole in the side of the mountain to wait out the night.

As morning rose it became apparent that there were a dozen creepers outside. Yay.

I dealt with them and thought i would trudge in-land to see if anything was familiar. I wandered until night was falling but all i found was empty fields and a savanna. Harvested some of the new acacia trees to make torches and such, since it seemed i would be here a while. At least, here until i could get the materials to make a compass and find my way home.

In my little hole in the side of the mountain, waiting out the night, i decided to make a boat and try crossing the ocean to find home. I was fairly sure i knew which way was home based on the position of the sun.
So the next morning i set off in my new boat, with a supply of boats just in case.

That is possibly the largest ocean i have ever seen in minecraft. I traveled for a good 15 minutes in one direction without ever seeing land. I gave up on that idea and turned back. Eventually i hit land again near the mountain.

I figured heading in-land was gong to be my only hope but i decided to try a different direction.

20 minutes, many nights, and dozens of monsters killed later i saw some cobblestone: Civilization!
Best feeling ever!
Turned out to be a far out-lying road with no rails yet. followed it a while, found my way home.
Phew!
