Map
« on: February 24, 2012, 07:39:45 AM »
I'm looking for a program to give a link to a live map of the server. I'm pretty sure we'd need to get bukkit to get most of them to work and that doesn't usually update as fast as the game. If I could find something that I could use without using bukkit, that'd be awesome.

Here's an example of what I'm looking for and also for Pianoman to see how massive other maps are compared to ours.

*gulp* Are you f*ing kidding me?!  That's humungous!   I *just* commented in another thread that our world is getting large.  This is insane!

Isn't that amazing? I like that our map has sort of rings of terrain generated from different versions. It make our world unique. Even with our seed, no one could ever generate the same world we gave. There are some where the transitions between generations don't work, but I just pretend they're upheavals from fault lines and enjoy them for what they are.

Hahahah.  Very true, I'm with you there.  Our world is unique among today's.  We must keep it.

That fast-update map is fantastic.  It's amazing how close you zoom in to the world and with clear resolution.

This looks promising. It's not live, but it renders and hosts the maps online. There's a queue to process them, but that's better than bugging my roommate to let me do it on his computer.

I'm uploading our map now to see how it turns out.

Excellent.  I was just thinking about that.

Hehe, I think I can see the route you took with your cousin to find a mycelium.  Very cardinal.

Our world's looks kinda tiny, doesn't it?  Temple's looking good, though, and spawn is equally as impressive.  I've found most of my lava towers (nostalgia!)

This is from a save before we headed out for mushroom island. I'll try to get a newer map up soon. I'll probably do weekly?

I found the little hut from when you guys were on the way to the amusement park and they rotated the directions halfway through your trip.

Also, I see one of your mine shaft bases far east of spawn.

Where are looking in the east?

I just noticed that each map has statistics!  We have 220 blocks of "bed" and only 35 of "brick".  Also, somewhat reassuring, (while simultaneously depressing), is the 392,908 blocks of diamond ore supposedly beneath our feet.  We also have 24 blocks of End portal frame??  Where in the overworld is that?!

I somehow doubt that we've made 736,720 blocks of fencing.

220 beds seems a little big at first, but if I think of every little outpost out there itdoes seem about right. I like the look of brick. I wish clay was more common. That's a whole lot more diamond than I was expecting.

Strongholds. Dig, dig, dig.

I somehow doubt that we've made 736,720 blocks of fencing.

That doesn't seem right at all. I would believe thousands, even tens of thousands maybe. It must be grouping something else in with it.

I'm mostly frustrated that there's 1023 mycelium already. Where's that? It was already out there I went on three day exploration to find more? Dang it.

Haha, yes, X:1880, Z:370 is the location of that last 7x7 mineshaft.  Damn, this map is good.  I'm so glad you found it.  I think I found a dungeon just under my big tree?

I'm noticing a lot of chunk mismatches—I'm guessing they were generated from different versions of Minecraft (hence, different generation algorithms).

Anyway, I think it's time to make a different kind of mineshaft.  The real kind that bores down into the earth and travels for miles under the ground.  There's no point cutting through all of those top layers of rock anymore.  We just need diiiiaaaamooond.

I did a back up on Sunday and uploaded it Sunday night. It generated a map that looks to be a couple weeks old. Weird. I don't know what happened there. I assume I accidentally uploaded an older map.

Well, here's an updated map until I get a current one.

You can see the lighthouse island, which is just north of the mushroom island.

I figured it out! The program that makes the maps isn't set up for Anvil yet. However, when we updated, it copied and stored the existing map in the original format before converting it into the Anvil format. So the last original map still exists in the save folder. The program that this guy is using just grabbed that file and generated a map from it. So this isn't from Sunday, it's from the 1st of March. I'll edit the info accordingly. Hopefully the software is updated soonish.

Yeah, we hadn't reached the mushroom island yet. We didn't have any idea how close we were.

My cousin postulated that the extremely high fence count might be explained by the now almost ubiquitous abandoned mineshafts.

It sounds like he's going with Overviewer. It looks comparable enough to me. We won't get the same level of detail, night maps, or cave maps, but personally that was just kind of a novelty anyway.

I found the cave maps handy but can live without them.  Night maps were a novelty, more useful for showing off things that might look nice when lit at night (e.g. a finished temple).  I also liked the resolution you could achieve (oh, so close) but Overviewer looks like it can zoom in close enough.

Umm, good question. I do use them sometimes. Especially with people that aren't familiar with the server. If I told you I was 300 meters south west of the Temple, you'd know what I'd mean. You be able to tell me that you're just west of your tower south of spawn. For some one who's new to the map, they don't know those landmarks and they don't do any good. One of the points of the roads was to serve as landmarks so you'd never get too lost. In that sense I'm playing for the most part as if coordinates aren't a thing.

I agree. Again, I've been building and planning as if there's no way to use coordinates. I leave torch trails and build landmarks. That said, I've broken that more than a few times for people that don't have the understanding or for quick reference on here.

So I'm in favor of keeping that spirit, but I'm admittedly soft on it.

The cave display on this one is really cool. The lighter yellow seem to be caves closer to the surface and the darker red seem to be deeper caves. I like that.

I've always been able to generate maps. They just got so big that I couldn't share them in a useful way anymore. I used to put them on Picasa, but very quickly they became too big to host. Then I put them on Docs, but you'd have to download them to use them.

I looked for a another solution for a really long time. There's a lot of that in the main thread, and that's the whole start of this thread.

Now I'm paying this guy to generate and host them in an interactive environment. It takes a little under 24 hours to download the files, compile them, upload to his site, and for it to generate. It was a modest cost and it works great.

I don't have a monopoly of the data though. As far as I'm concerned, it belongs to all of us. If you can figure out a way to transfer files that big, you're welcome to it.

I'll talk to r3beccaargh, her server has a live map thing going. Her server is tree.enthouse.org I think, its one of the reddit community servers.

Haha. I'm sure Reddit servers have all the bells and whistles. A live map would still be pretty cool though.

Yeah, I've been mostly concentrating on the road east to you and west to Lanky. That seemed to be the direction of most of the traffic. I've also been working on some of the really remote roads to try to illustrate my bigger plan for the layout of the transportation network.

We did some major exploring to look for some new features, so I ran a new map.

http://www.minecraftworldmap.com/worlds/uc3K3#

I also reran that last map with signs, if anyone wants to see that. If anyone finds it helpful, I can rerun all of them going forward to do that.

It puts all the signs in the world on the map. Go to the last map, there's a check box thing to display signs.

Go to the last one, not the most recent. http://www.minecraftworldmap.com/worlds/aDubs

Up on the top right, there's a button that says "markers". Click that, and click "signs".

There are a few other options for maps too:

Change corner north is facing
Display signs
Display chests/furnaces
Display mob spawners
Change texture pack

I left north for consistency, but if anyone ever wanted a different areal angle for something, it's doable.
Signs get so cluttered, I'm not sure how useful it is, so I wouldn't bother running it a second time unless someone really liked it.
I think displaying chests is a bad idea. Just in case anyone is stashing anything away that they don't want other people to get at.
Mob spawners give away dungeons, and I think it's more fun to stumble across them.
I don't have any need for using a texture pack, but like the angle one, if anyone wants a special render, I've already paid for the service, let's use it.

I've been satisfied with the common method without signs, however unless you wanted to hide something (like an adventure being created) I see no harm in including them.  Maybe we should continue to omit them.  I just found some area on the map I've never seen before because someone put lots of signs in there.

New map.

As always, I updated the link in the server info thread too. That should always have the most current map.

You can see screwyness that happened to the east. It's not even connected to the map pruning I did, so It must be something else. I have lots of map backups, so I can fix it. It's just the uploading that takes forever.

Yay. I was wondering when I'd see a new map. I went east after returning from The End (meaning I jumped off the island and into the void). I noticed something was up and then *BAM* half of the road had been excised.

I'm looking at the map now… do you see all those meandering strips on the edges of the centre bunch of map? Was that you? Sailing through the ocean? If so, you must've travelled a long time.

I can't explain the square of messed up map on the east road/around the village at all. Very strange, but should be fixable.

The squared off shape? Yeah, I was mapping out the 5k lines at one point. I even built some roads out there. Getting stone out there is a pain though. Gotta keep building my rail first I guess.

The more I look at this map, the more I see missing chunks. Hopefully those are just with the mapping program and not the actual map. I know I have to manually prune out the old map files before I zip it and upload it. I assume I accidentally snipped too many. I know for sure that the missing chunks at spawn aren't there.

I just got second notice that it's done. This time it's just a quarter of the map. You can see the cathedral, the 5k base my cousin started and got bored of, and the 10k from spawn area he wants to build in now.

I downloaded a new copy today, and I think I zipped it, but then I forgot to upload it. Oops.

That's okay.

Your cousin wants to build 10 kilometres away from spawn? Does he really want to be that far away from us? It's hard enough for me to build out to 5km!

The owner of the left a message about the map. It sounds like we were clogging up the system. He checking to see if it's anything on his end before I upload again.

Well, he really wants me to set up a second server. You know, because ours is so crowded.

When the ip was pointing at the wrong map he "consoled" me by letting me know that it was okay to just start from scratch. Even after repeatedly telling him that I had plenty of backups. The idea seems to have rooted though. He wanted to start a new map and rotate weekly with this one. (Do all 13 year olds operate under the assumption that they are the only people in existence?) I explained that the map was as big as he wanted and if he wanted to "start from scratch", he could just walk further. So he loaded up with supplies from Spawn (incongruity noted) and walked.

Oh, lanky. That made me laugh out loud. I hope you're having a good time in Amerika!

(Do all 13 year olds operate under the assumption that they are the only people in existence?)
I didn't. But I was pretty polite. I dunno about other 13-year olds. I'm sure that some of them were self-absorbed and inconsiderate.

I'm glad you noted his contradiction: wanting to start afresh yet taking off with group supplies. Maybe you could point that out to him. He just may not even realise it's a douchey act.

I have to admit that I've, at times, liked the idea of starting a new map—but I'll also be the first to admit that it's just because I'm ashamed of having started to build so many things without finishing them.

He's getting a little better all of the time.

I didn't. But I was pretty polite. I dunno about other 13-year olds. I'm sure that some of them were self-absorbed and inconsiderate.

I didn't notice if anyone else was, but I know I wasn't self-absorbed.

Sorry. I know what you meant, but that was too funny to not point out.

I'm glad you noted his contradiction: wanting to start afresh yet taking off with group supplies. Maybe you could point that out to him. He just may not even realise it's a douchey act.

Meh. He can take a chest of cobble if he wants. He doesn't understand that if you're going to take anything, just some hard to collect raw materials is all you need. He spends more time and space taking wood planks, cobble stone, and stacks of already processed food. All things he's going to find right away anyway, but is also easy to replace.

I have to admit that I've, at times, liked the idea of starting a new map—but I'll also be the first to admit that it's just because I'm ashamed of having started to build so many things without finishing them.

I love the work-in-progress state of the server. There's never any lack of things to do.

The guy that runs the map site diagnosed a faulty region file in our map. Maybe the illusive server crashing file? I'm going to download a copy, delete the file, run the map, and see if there's anything there. If it's blank, he may have just fixed our world big time.
