Hopper
« on: March 30, 2013, 06:15:09 AM »
Hoppers are redstone powered blocks that pull items from one fillable block to another.

You could put one between a chest and a furnace, and it would automatically empty the finished items from the furnace into the chest. I assume you could do the same to fill up the furnace. Imagine filling a raw material chest on one end and having a filled end result chest on the other side.

...I'm going to need to redesign spawn.

Holy crap. This kind of automated stuff is handy. And, I have to say that, while most Minecraft mods don't even interest me, there are a lot of standard Minecraft blocks that originated from those mods.
LOL @ Pam... if I had $20 for every time someone used that word with me... well....

I'd probably have like $60

In one of my worlds i had an automated smelting system.
I had a row of 8 furnaces, each with 2 hoppers feeding them (one for fuel, the other for material to be smelted) and then hoppers under each furnace feeding into each other in a chain eventually dumping into a chest. What was in that chest was then dumped into a minecart which when full would depart for the surface, eventually dumping the finished goods in my castle on the surface.

The furnaces were underground, near where i was mining.

The hoppers for fuel and materials were fed by 2 minecarts that would keep travelling over them until empty.

Basically after every trip down the mines, i would dump everything i needed smelted into one minecart, and all fuel i'd collected into the other and set them both going.

A few minutes later finished goods start arriving on the surface.

My design has limitations, but it's the simplest (as in space required, ease of setup/modification, and materials required to build it) and it's really reliable.
There are certain limitations that cannot be avoided; chief among which is if a minecart heads for an automated unloading station, it can only unload if the chunk the unloading station is in is inhabited at the time.
If the chunk isn't "loaded" the cart will just bounce back, still full.
Luckily, the chunks are from sky box to bedrock, so you could have the system buried underground and deliver to the surface, as long as someone is in that chunk.

The other limitation, which someone smarter than i may work out a work-around for: the system of detectors and circuits used fails to let a minecart leave if material is still passing through or in a hopper, so the cart cannot leave. The only way to avoid this at present is to make sure no more than a single (or half) chest worth of material will ever be fed to the minecart that is to transport the goods, or include a button to force the minecart to leave.

I Hope that made some semblance of sense!
I will build a working model of my design under spawn if you'd like.

I presume hoppers came from the Technic pack. It has all sorts of machinery gizmos.

Certainly!
I'm just designing a space to put my auto-smelter under my castle.
Can't decide what level to have it on.

I took a stab at creating an auto smelter. Already I see a lot of ways I want to change it.

It started (first picture) so you could just fill up three chests. Fuel to power the first furnace, logs to be turned into charcoal, and cobble to be smelted by the charcoal into stone. You put in the three ingredients, and one level down, stone comes out.

Then (second picture) I added in a rail line (to nowhere) that fills the cobble chests from chest-carts.

Now that I've done all that, I can see how one could fill all three with carts. Getting them to run right is going to be tricky for me, but this is a really cool tool.

I think both pictures were too big to put in one post. Here's the rail added.

This can't be the best way of doing it.

This set up pulls logs out of chests and drops them into a series of furnaces. The charcoal produced drops into another furnace, which is fed by carts which can be filled with cobble (currently the cobble feed is just a rail loop and I have to stop the cart and fill it manually). The once the cobble smelting furnace is full of charcoal, the overflow charcoal produced drops down to the bottom where a cart pulls it out of chests and brings it back up and drops it back into first furnace to smelt logs into charcoal.

I can harvest tees and put them in chests and they'll automatically be turned to charcoal.

As soon as I run the rail, I can harvest cobble, send it up and it'll be turned to stone.

And now I've wasted too much of my Saturday afternoon.

From my limited understanding, it sounds about half-automated? Lanky is better with carts and redstone than I am. I'd need a tutorial to help with improving upon your system. I also have no experience with hoppers, since I've been out of the game for a while. I am getting back up to speed, though, since I've been watching Let's Plays and other Minecraft videos on Youtube.

You put cobble in one end, logs in another, and it spits out stone on a third. It's about as automated as I could think to make it.

By their nature, having an input end and a modular output end, they are tricky to work with at first. It doesn't take too long to pick up on though. The redstone and rail stuff was a bit trickier for me. I was trying to get over elaborate in places, and you can see the residue of that in my design. I settled on some much simpler tricks.

My brain has been churning, and I think I've figured out some cool improvements that I might implement in spawn. I'm thinking of a little enclosed area, mirroring the storage area, that you can fill with cobble on the sides and pull stone out from the front. There should be more than enough room inside to run rail and stuff, and I figured out how to do a reliable on/off switch. Then, if I can figure it all out, I might set up a place in a corner of the tree farm level to make charcoal and fuel the whole thing.

Thanks. It's kind of a mess and you can really tell I was making it up as I went, but it does what it's supposed to do and fairly well.

There's one back at spawn right now that is much prettier. It's more efficient, has an on/off switch, and it even has a cool maintenance access so you can get into the easily modifiable guts.

I still have to manually feed it coal, but once I build a charcoal factory down on the tree farm level, it'll be really badass. Also, it's only running at half capacity right now because I used up every last bit of iron. Eventually, I'm going to decouple the two sides, and build a separate level below the existing one for one of the rows of chests.
