Brick

It turns out that clay is pretty plentiful in the newer map generation. It's just at the bottom of the ocean. If you bring some signs to create air pockets, it's pretty easy to harvest.

Signs to make air pockets!  Of course!
LOL @ Pam... if I had $20 for every time someone used that word with me... well....

I'd probably have like $60

Signs, ladders, fences: these are all blocks that occupy a space, meaning that nothing else can occupy that space.   Stick a sign underwater, and suddenly water can't fill that space... but you can still walk through!  Stack another sign above that and you have air high enough to stand in.

Can you stack signs? I brought dirt, made two high pillars, and stuck signs on the sides of those. Worked like a charm. Now I can build brick mansions.

I really like brick for aesthetics, it's just so damn inefficient.
4 clay into one brick, 4 bricks into one brick block. That's the worst ratio of any material in the game, as far as i can think.
You could dig up a huge clay bed, only to end up with about 4 brick blocks.

But it does give a very nice contrast in colour to the grey of the stone blocks.

I have never practically built with brick in our survival world. Like you said, the ratio has never made it worthwhile.

In a previous world a friend and i had going, i started a design for a very large castle that used a lot of brick.
That was before i realised just how much clay i would need.

I worked it out;
I ended up placing approx 6000 brick blocks.
6000 brick blocks equals 24000 bricks.
24000 Bricks equals 96000 pieces of clay.

Auuuuuuggghhhhhh

I started that one brick house far to the north and west. Even with ocean bottom clay, it was taking far too long.

Do villagers trade brick or clay?
