The Wither is a planned mob. It's in the code now, for the 1.4 pre-release, but there's no way to normnally make it appear and it hasn't been listed in the 1.4 release notes. It looks like it's another boss mob. It attacks all mobs, not just the player, with a three headed projectile attack that has a poison like effect that results in death.

The fact that it's a boss hints that it could be a whole extra dimension again, like the Nether.

Dimensions, yes.  I couldn't've put my finger on it but, yes, extra dimensions will add… well, extra dimensions to the game.

I'm friggin excited.  We haven't even made it to the Ender realm.  We need to have an Ender adventure!

They can move exceptionally fast.

Damn.

Withers have the unique ability to "eat" blocks… This sound is the same one used for zombies breaking down doors.

I hate that sounds. It scares me.

There's new information on the Whithers. They are bosses, but bosses that you summon. Sort of like building a snow or iron golem. You have to collect three skulls (another new feature), from nether skeletons (a new mob), and assemble them in the fashion depicted in the Whither Painting (a new painting). Then when you kill the the Whither, you get a thingy that you need to make the beacon block.

I know we haven't beat the dragon yet, but when we do, I was thinking the End would be a good place to summon the Whither. I don't want him tearing up the regular world.

...and I need to dissect him for his tasty hearts.

He's harder to kill than the end dragon, by all accounts.

My god, there's so much I have to catch up on. I haven't seen nether skeletons.

Any idea if they appear in previously generated chunks? I haven't seen one either.
