Enchanting
« on: February 25, 2012, 09:47:52 AM »
Enchanting is actually pretty straightforward. There's an enchantment table surrounded by bookcases. The more bookcases, the better the enchantment. You put an item on the table and it gives you a sort of random list of enchantments based on your xp. Then you can select one and it converts however much xp that enchantment costs into an enchantment.

I have tables set up at Spawn. Some of the bookcases were raided, but I'll finish fixing it up someday. I did it once and there really wasn't anything to it. I got a sword with some minor knockback.

I guess I'm one to let myself die fairly often, so I'll have to change my play style to get many enchantments.

But... one can't raid a bookcase.  No bookcase is dropped when a bookcase tile is destroyed.

As for dying — yeah, need to ensure a plentiful food supply.
LOL @ Pam... if I had $20 for every time someone used that word with me... well....

I'd probably have like $60

Well, he knocked out a row anyway. I've been talking to him about how not okay it is to do stuff like that. He's getting it. I'm just glad the Temple or anything like that aren't near Spawn.

Just as well that I wandered far away for an appropriate site, eh ;)

By the way, remember when I asked last Sunday (Nether adventure day) if you could enchant bows?  Yes, you can enchant bows.

I have a fire bow. It is amazing.

My cousin and I were out looking for a mushroom island. In the middle of the ocean, far from any land, he decided to act 13 and started firing arrows at me. I told him to stop. Then he actually hit me. I turned around and fired a flaming arrow at him. He lit up like a match and his boat crumbled immediately. He had a harder time firing arrows while swimming behind my boat.

That is very cool.  Very handy.  Enchantment—another point for competition :)

Tables are so two weeks ago. Now we have programs to predict the likelihood of different enchantments depending on the tool, material, and enchantment level.

Dang, sounds good.  But I have to install .net v4 first.  I'll have to give it a go later.

New XP and enchanting stuff for 1.3.

- Silk Touch will be able to pick up Ender Chests, Ice, and Glass Panes.[18]
- The first 16 levels are linear (17XP/level), while levels 17+ require more points per level.
- Maximum enchantment level reduced from 50 to 30.
- XP orbs can now be gained through mining ores, and using a furnace for smelting.
-- Gaining Experience from mining ore is different for each type of ore. (Mining Coal will give you the least amount while Diamond Ore & Emerald Ore will give the most amount of XP).
- Enchantment has been reorganized so the higher/stronger level enchantment is on the bottom while the lowest is on the top. (The middle obviously being in the middle of the enchantment table.)

Also, we'll be able to see enchanted items in SMP now.

I like all of these changes.  I've not gotten into enchanting yet.  I have some catching up to do.

Instead of dying and losing all of my levels all of the time, I started enchanting every time I hit level 20.

I built an enchanting room near the stonghold. There's a chest next to it with what I've enchanted.

Mining has been producing xp really fast. We should have a few fully enchanted diamond sets soon enough.

In 1.4 breeding will give XP also. So now you can fight, mine, smelt, and breed to get XP. I like the broadening of the system.

Me too. It rewards the breadth of experience available in Minecraft, rather than rewarding the fighters only. Minecraft is essentially a completely open world—that you can even completely destroy down to the core of the planet, or build up to heaven—and XP is now starting to reflect that.

I built an enchanting room near the stonghold. There's a chest next to it with what I've enchanted.
We should also make potions. I have an idea. I'm going to steal a small area near the cauldrons.

Yeah, feel free to use what's there for now. I'll be building a new crafting/smelting/enchanting/brewing/repairing area soon.
