In 1.3 Nether Portals will rarely spawn Zombie Pigmen.

I didn't know that they could also be made in the overworld when lightning strikes pigs. I remember that being a thing, but I assumes it was removed.

There were a few things that could occur that I never found for myself.  Like lightning striking creepers turning them into electrified creeper with bigger explosion radii.  I even actively hunted for them at one stage.  Any time I heard lightning I'd race over to it.  But no luck

This guy figured out how to use the zombie pigmen spawning on portals to create a zombie pigman farm.

The first one is obviously something you could only make in creative. He also has a closer to practical version at the end.

We have 127,500 portals here, and so we get a shit-tonne of pigmens here.

There has also been a reported incident of ghasts coming through nether portals, extremely rarely.

I've seen a pig get struck and turned into a zombie pigman. It was quite a surprise at the time, as i didn't know about that!
