Chain armor is getting added back into the game. Only as an item you can trade villagers for. It looks like it sits right between gold and iron armor.

In 1.4 we'll be able to dye leather armor. Kind of cool.

I've also heard ideas about giving movement bonuses to lighter armor and movement penalties to heavier armor. I like that idea, because it gives another reason to ever use leather. I don't think there are official plans to do that yet though.

I like the idea, too.  Also, leather is replenishable.
