I was watching Music Man today and Mrs. Peroo's line to Marion in 'Piano Lessons' made me think of this thread.
"I know all about your standards
And if you don't mind my sayin' so
There's not a man alive
Who could hope to measure up to that blend'a
Paul Bunyan, Saint Pat and Noah Webster
You've got concocted for yourself outta your Irish imagination,
Your Iowa stubbornness, and your library fulla' books!"
Marion has turned down lovers, in fact she later sings a song about all the men who have courted her, because they aren't what she thinks love should be. Of course, Marion ends up getting with a total scam-artist who lies through his teeth to get what he wants: it's just that the lies he tells are the ones she wants to hear. Is that Meredith Wilson's idea of true love?
