WoW (PC)
« on: January 25, 2008, 02:12:38 AM »
According to a press release at http://blizzard.co.uk/press/080122.shtml subscription world wide for World of Warcraft has reached 10 million players. I can say now that I am not one of those 10 million, or at least I won't be after the 28th as I have cancelled my subscription for now.

Has any other game had 10 million people playing it at once? Game sales do show higher sales than 10 million somewhere, but as it is subscription, it shows this game is popular. Perhaps too popular.

Quote
"It's very gratifying to see gamers around the world continuing to show such enthusiasm and support for World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're always pleased to welcome new players to the game, and we're looking forward to sharing the next major content update with the entire community in the months ahead."

Of course they are happy. 10 million players paying US$14.99 a month to play... let us do some maths...

US$14.99 * 10 million = US$149,900,000 per month
US$14.99 * 10 million * 12 months for a year = US$1,798,800,000 a year in subscription.

Add on the fact that the game started off at US$50 plus the expansion which totalled about the same.

Original Game US$50 * 10 million = US$500,000,000
Expansion US$50 * 7 million^ = US$350,000,000

Just from buying the game we have US$850,000,000.

This is an insane amount of money being made by this game. Granted keeping the servers running, bandwidth, content development and employees would take some away from that but that is still a lot of money.

And considering that Blizzard has other games also selling well, they must truely be raking in the cash.

I wish i could write a game that would earn US$1,798,800,000 a year in subscription fees alone.

^Note that not everyone has bought the expansion so this is a guestimate

One thing to point out is that Blizzard did count all subscriptions.... even the ones that aren't currently paid up...

Actually i found in the months and now years after i stopped, i spend way more money on my social life.  Alcomohol cost for one night far exceeds the monthly cost of the game.   Although you're sanity is a bit more valuable than $20/month.

How about this lanky:  You still have your PS2, right? Every Monday, I'll drop by your house with my PS1 memory card that contains my long-running FF7 game.  You level up my characters according to my specifications, and maybe get some weapons and materia for me, and then on friday afternoon, I'll drop by again, to pick up my memory card.

That way, on the weekend, I can deal with the actual storyline of FF7 without endlessly levelling up and forgetting what I was supposed to be doing.  In return, you'll be getting your daily dose of mindless RPGing, but in a way that won't be so addictive, as the music is all MIDI, and the graphics haven't been "revolutionary" since FF8's release in '97.

OK?

Given that the last LAN was just WoW, I think that there will be some additional variation as there will be a lot more people at this one and not everyone will want to play WoW.

Thought - could he actually be fostering several characters for other people?   I'm just thinking that this doesn't enhance gameplay experience that much, surely, not to mention how much it costs, so I think he's getting some other kind of kickback.

I think other people have suggested gold mining.

I have a terrible secret.  Please don't judge me.

My brother plays WoW.

I want to find him a Christmas present that is WoW-related.  Maybe even WoW patches.  No, I mean the ones you put on your arm in order to stop cravings.  Those patches.  Do they have them?

Got any ideas?  He's not a typical gamer type, so anything too geeky will be lost on him.  Also, it needs to be cheap and fit in a small box.

There are WoW branded T-Shirts, Trading Cards, a board game, and miniatures... I have also seen limited edition sword and steins...

You can also get a miniature made of your actual character (gear and all)...
