Video Game Console Prices
« on: March 14, 2008, 07:06:59 AM »
I stumbled across this interesting graph.

It's pretty amazing how Nintendo has kept their prices so low.  Especially when you consider that inflation isn't taken into account.

Do NeoGeo and 3DO really count?

Yes they do.

But PS3 is one of the most expensive.  It's in the Top 3.  So you both win.

How come Fag-box and PS3 have two different prices?

I was originally a Nintendo homie.  From NES to SNES to N64...   they only lost me on Gamecube when I started an illicit affair with Playstation.  Sony treats me so bad, but I keep coming back... I feel like it's the best thing out there that I can deserve.

But the Wii...   that makes me think I should go back to the one that treated me right from the beginning and accepted me as the gamer I am,  not what sort of gamer I should be.

All in good time, my sweet.

Oh.  Hi.  Yeah, nice graph, Superman.

The different sized hard drives I'm assuming.  So for the decent version of the hardware you'd have to look at the more expensive price.

*Notes the absence of the Wii on the graph*
Only you would bring up Music Man here.  ...and have it be totally relevant.

I noticed that too.  It could have been made just after PS3's and just prior to Wii's release, between November 11th and November 16th.  I could also have been made to portray Nintendo as consistently pricing their consoles.  I'm not sure what Wii released at, but I'm guessing it's a little more than $200.

It's still in line, isn't it? A Wii will set you back about AU$400 so it's not that much of a price jump compared to Sony and Microsoft's lines.

According to this graph NES, Super Nintendo, N64, and Game Cube all released at $200.

thats cuz nintendo, since the 1860's when they started out making game tiles and card games, have -always- been about the game experience. Sony started as a premium consumer entertainment provider, and while the quality is present, they build their games like they build their technology generally, with premium components and squillions of bucks worth of R&D behind it, which isnt a bad thing, it just throws the curve out a little as you can see on that graph. good to see they have gone right back to the Channel F as well. (sad to see Sony have recently discontinued their line of Trinitron CRT's as well speaking of premium technology). Microsoft, well.. we dont need to go there.

Nintendo has always been about the gaming, and they rely on simple tech to do it. Their platform is as close to open source as you get, and they always take their ideas forward from the last generation (the only one where they broke their curve was the gamecube, getting a lukewarm reaction from the industry at best) Sega would be in the same boat if they could have recovered from the faceraping that was the dreamcast fiasco. They dont pay megabucks to game developers to churn out games (adding to the end unit cost), they simply let people make games, and if they are good, they are in. there are dozens of SDK's out there, for free, for pretty much every nintendo platform to date. We could make a game, and if it was awesome, they would pick it up. Sony and Microsoft would want a contract saying the game will sell this many units, and if it doesnt we come after you for the money.

in short, Nintendo FTW, and am currently playing Yoshi's Island on SNES, which has had the dust blown off it and now resides in my loungeroom alongside my NES. If I could find the RF adapter for my megadrive it would be down there too.

I think Nintendo's success proves that gameplay is more important than high end texture mapping and 8 gig super shadow processing chips.

The fact that I've spent more time in the last two months playing Mega Man and not the newest FPS should be sending the gaming companies a message.

They always rape you with the game prices. Prolly coz they know its harder to torrent and burn such things.

I own a NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, PS2, Nintendo DS, and along the line a Sega Game Gear.  By far the Nintendo consoles have been the best value and most entertaining.

I have an NES, 64, PS2, and a GBA.

I think it's a toss up between the PS2 and the GBA for me.

It is? How?

PC gaming you torrent, install with a virtual drive, play. Consoles you need to torrent and then burn and a soooper slooooow speed to a DVD ROM, and normally also have the console hacked beforehand. Wife's brothers do it all the time, but they have nothing to do. Most gamers either (a) dont have the know how or (b) dont have the time. In my perception, that is, things down under could be different.

BS, I must be allowed back to play Zelda at some point.

Don't ever slander FPS, laughingnome.  It's awesome.   FPS multi-players are always so much fun.  Golden Eye 007 on N64 was the greatest game of its time, partly for being awesome to play on single player, but also for being a barrell of laughs on multiplayer.

I particularly like the amateur/non-official Atari games.  But I'm not sure that people care about that enough these days.  There's less appreciation of read-write culture and grassroots input, and more focus on having professional copyrighted products hand-fed to you.    We need a TVS equivalent in consoles.
