The Thief Series (PC)
« on: August 24, 2010, 03:28:02 AM »
First there was Thief: The Dark Project
Then came Thief II: The Metal Age, which kicked absolute arse.
Thief III: Deadly Shadows was... okay...

Which would make you think that the series has peaked and it's on the way down. But I hold high hopes for Thief IV. The game has been in early development since May 2009, and while rumours fly around nothing shoudl be pinned down until Deus Ex: Human Revolution wraps up its development stage. Thief represents the pinnacle of the Stealth Genre, which has contributed to both its success (as opposed to bang-bang-shoot-em-up FPS) and the downslide of T3 which some (mainly those used to Halo, etc) gamers just didn't 'get'.

Also, I was sent a funny little review by Zero Punctuation on Thief. Play the game (I still have T2 and it runs well on XP if you want to borrow it) and enjoy:

Only you would bring up Music Man here.  ...and have it be totally relevant.

I bought a dual-pack of Thief II + Thief III a couple of months ago. I can't find it now (I've yet to install them). I've actually not played either of them, but Thief: The Dark Project was fucking awesome. The sound of dragging chains accompanying those ghost soldiers always managed to send chills down my spine. Something about the fact that it was all about stealth made it just much more atmospheric for me.

I didn't even realise that there was a Thief III. Didn't Eidos Interactive drop Looking Glass Studios in the middle of development for it? Maybe that's why Thief III turned out to be, in your words, "... okay..."

I haven't actually played a game for nearly half a year now.. which is strange.. I just don't have game libido anymore. Am I getting old? I'm only 28.

... well, speak of the devil, the little fella's starting to rise. Maybe my libido's not dead.
LOL @ Pam... if I had $20 for every time someone used that word with me... well....

I'd probably have like $60

Great series, but haven't they kinda run out of steam? There isn't a lot of new directions you can take such a thing
I used to think piracy was bad, because I first heard about it by people who didn't understand it. I understand piracy now. Piracy is good.

I don't know. Maybe. But it'll be interesting to hear what they're kicking around. I personally wouldn't mind if they ditched the T3 concept of questing and retrun to a linear story of T2 but with non-linear and highly detailed maps. It'd be a nostalgia trip, sure, but the improved graphics, AI and such could really up the franchise.

Regardless of what they do, the 3rd person view has to go. It makes it far too easy to "look" around corners and such withought actually looking (and thus exposing yourself) that it borders on inane. What made the first two games so unique was the lack of 3rd person view and the total reliance on your auditory perception and wits to avoid being snuck up on yourself.

I agree.  1st person view only, otherwise it's like cheat mode is always enabled.

yeah, especially if you can rotate that camera to see a 360 environment.
