Team Fortress 2 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
« on: August 08, 2008, 02:52:41 AM »
As I mentioned in the Portal thread, I just picked up The Orange Box.

I'm not so sure about this game.  I love the concept.  Class based FPS?  Brilliant.  It's just a little maddening.  Too much shit going on for me to learn how to play.

As far as I can tell it's all multiplayer.  I'm not complaining.  Makes perfect sense to me.  I just need a tutorial, or a training course, or tiered gameplay so I can at least learn what I'm doing before I become cannon fodder for the Reds.  Maybe that stuff is on there and I just didn't notice.

I'm sure this is one I'm going to grow to love.  The complexity is beautiful, but at the same time it's proving to be an obstacle for this first time player.

So after trying TF2 for a while, I decided the learning curve was too steep for me and I put it away for another day.

Then, maybe a month ago, I pulled it back out.  Now I'm addicted.  Seriously.  I knew there was something there.  I just had to get over the initial hump of learning how to play.  It would do Steam well to create a simple tutorial or a least a learner's arena.  Oh well.  I guess learning how to play in the heat of battle could be considered part of the fun.

The problem with a "learner's area" is that you just know it will be full of wankers who know how to play with nothing better to do than make life hell for all of the learners...

True.  However, Quake Arena has ranked matches.  So people with similar win/loss ratios automatically get put in rooms together so that it always a challenge, but never impossible.

I don't think that it's viable to do the whole game that way.  People use a lot of custom maps, custom game types, custom rules, etc... and like to play with their groups of friends.  That's part of the appeal, and I wouldn't advocate getting rid of that.  I don't think it would be that bad to have some low level ranked games for those that want it just to get started.  Once you make it over the initial steep learning curve, it's pretty easy to compete with even seasoned players.

the ranking system does make it better. But I think it should only limit how low you can play. If you are getting started you should be able to play with the big boys if you think you can but the big boys should not be able to play with the learners.

So once you pass a certain skill level you can only play with those of an equal or higher skill level.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Doesn't have to be elaborate, just something to learn the ropes on.  It's very fast paced and hard to get started on.  Once you get past the most rudementry skill level it's easy enough to pick up.

A few months ago they added in a tutorial/training thing.  I should have looked at it so I could report back if it's any good.

I was off the game for a while, but for the last couple of weeks I've been playing every day again.  Every time there's an update it draws me back and it's always fun again.  This is by far the best $20 I have ever spent in my life.

Also, Tainted, it is out on PS3 and XBox.  The problem is that you'll never get any updates on PS3 and limited and for a cost updates on the XBox.  I've also heard that the server sizes are so small that it kind of messes up the "team" part of Team Fortress.  Just from hearing people talk it's probably not even worth it.  I still think you should get your husband to load it up and set you up with PC controller.  They're like $20 for the actual Microsoft one that' just like the XBox controller and probably less for a Logitech that works the same as a PS3.

I uninstalled TF2 a good while ago.  When I get a decent gaming laptop/desktop I'll install it back.  Though I'll be playing Skyrim all the time.

I hadn't played in a while. When I got home last night he was playing and we put in a couple hours.

We got stuck on Coldfront with some third random. He ended up being pretty bad, so my roommate went on his team. It was a really evenly matched game which is always the most fun. My roommate alternated between heavy and sniper (try picking one class to counter that), and the other guy was demo. I alternated between scout to capture points and pyro to take out his demo.

The item server glitched out while I had the Boston Basher equipped, so I was stuck with that guy. I'm sure it's good weapon for some people, but I'm not exactly a precision player. I killed myself with it far more than I killed anyone else with it.

Who is he?  Did I miss something?  I agree, balanced teams is probably the most fun.

I would pick spy - default weapons.

I like the boston basher though I don't use it that much.  I think I prefer the Bat right now.

My brother and I put in some quality bonding time on TF2 on Friday. ...like 5ish hours.

He's kind of a natural at sniping. Look out TF2 players.

Interesting thing about the free to play accounts. You can accepts items as a free to play, but you can't give items. (I assume to stop people from creating item farming accounts or something.) It worked out well for us though, because I have a fair amount of doubled up items. I usually go trade them away for stuff I need, but I just hooked him up so he'd have some options.

If anyone is ever just starting off, hit me up and I'll throw a few items your way.

If you can play Minecraft in Beta, you should be able to handle TF2. My brother played through Fallout 3 and can't run Minecraft. How messed up is that?

Send me a friend thingy. I'll send you some junk.

My brother and I were playing the other night. He logged on first and I just joined whatever server he was on. My brother noticed that the second I logged on, my mic was muted by the admin (so fast, it had to have been pre-existing). I don't even use a mic, so it was pretty baffling to both of us. Then I saw the map and it all came back.

Months ago I had been on that server and there were these three guys with their mics cranked all the way up and they were yelling at each other in Spanish. I don't think they were trying to be dicks, but it was absolutely inconsiderate to everyone else trying to play. Instead of just muting their mics on my end, I decided to be proactive. I dug a mic out of the drawer and hooked it up. Then every time one of them started talking I'd let out a long "thhhpppbbbttt". It did deter them, but it also apparently earned me a lifetime mic ban on that server.

Okay, I just reinstalled TF2.  It's been four months and one week since I last played.  I'm getting my usual KD (Kill-death ratio) of 1-3.  I remember how I have lots of fun playing TF2 but it can make me rage sometimes.

Now I can join you guys in a few games.

Played a few rounds with Greensteam last night. It was really fun until some jerk airblasted me off the final point three times in a row costing my team the round. Ass.

Also, I noticed you have a few cool weapons there. I have a few extra stranges sitting around if you're interested. I have a Strange Backburner, and Strange Revolver that I'm looking to unload if you think you could part with that Three Rune Blade. I've also been known to unlock boxes now and then. I keep what I'm willing to trade up on page 1 of my backpack.

No, that's fair. Yeah, they're the ranked weapons. It tracks the number of kills you've made with that weapon, and the name changes as you rack up more kills. They're the hot thing right now, and I happen to be lucky enough to have accumulated a few. Now I just need to sell them off. I have two extra Strange Sniper Rifles that are priced at 2 refined, but it's hell finding someone that can afford the prices. I've been trying to trade them off for other rares instead, but the rare weapons I don't already have are pretty rare.

You should have gotten on as soon as possible, you'd be finding servers with smart people working together. That's what I did, and even after some time where most of the server were fools and I saw someone ask how to change class... we killed him a few times.

I am sure if you keep looking you'll find a server that wants to and can take down the boss. Go huntsman sniper, try not to die, as soon as you get on the island, run through the hat in the skull.

If you want this year's Halloween hat, someone on a different forum pointed me to a server that stops people from attacking each other during the boss fight. After three days of trying, I got it in three rounds. Also, sniper is now my number three class and I still absolutely suck at sniper.

Greensteam plays a lot too. I suppose his timezone is slightly more likely to line up with yours.

Superman, they had a tf2 update today that increases damage among many classes.

You should look at the tf2 update, though I suppose you really don't care about having your hat's 'level' increased.

A couple s. Stickybomb Launchers, a couple s. Homewreckers, a s. Skullcutter, a s. Shotgun, a s. Gloves of Running Urgently, and some strange parts. Backpack.tf indicates that I lost a lot of value in the process. At least the Gloves and Homewrecker are new for me.

You get any cool holiday stuff?
