GTA IV (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
« on: April 30, 2008, 21:33:31 PM »
I have run into my neighbours house to post this. I'm so glad the first time I have brought into the hype on something was this.

360 + GTA IV for $500AUD, as if you wouldn't.

there is a reason why this thing has been getting 9.8/10 rating across the board. it really is that fucking good.

Every gripe about San andreas has been met, and destroyed. I can climb buildings. I can take cover behind shit, and still get a good firing line. i actually need to do some work to boost a ride. the only thing i would say is a slide is the fact the target reticule locks onto your target if you choose, meaning the odd angry headshot is a guarantee as opposed to a fucking rad chance like it was in the last one. the city is lush, the story so far, is lush. the characters are, you guessed it, lush. the only new thing i see that i haven't done yet is chose not to kill someone even though they promise to keep their mouth shut. but why wouldn't you? :P

i was unsure as to whether i would get the interpipes back on at home, me and my new housemates have actually been reading.. like proper reading, with pages and spines and useful info that doesn't contain hyperlinks that always seem to take you back to the wiki entry on antigravitory cats, and were content. Not so now. there will be serial discussion when he gets home. i must do multiplayer with this.

it is a delicious game. i must play it.

i'll report more when i don't have a 360 in a 50 meter proximity *flees*

Me too!  I finished a really long book and I started another one!  Plus I printed out part of a book to read.  And I learnt to play a piano piece!   And I got a trombone!  And I made Anzac biscuits!  And then I did some gardening!     Who knew life could be so varied?

Long live no interwebs!  Well...  sort of...

I've heard lot of complaints actually.  Most of them are thing that make me giddy.  The fact that you can't just jump in any car and have it drive the same, or well.  The new police alert system looks amazing.  I'm so excited.  It's enough to make me want a next gen system.

The new police alert system looks amazing.

it is, and it makes you feel so much cooler and more underworldly when you actually need to apply some thought about how you are going to get out of their tracking system, as opposed to just going to the nearest star.

I'm also stoked my favourite car from the old games came forward, the voodoo. still the only "low rider" you can handbrake around a corner and not wind up stopped dead or in a tree.

Yeah.  GTA III had some great concepts, but after a while the star system and the pay and sprays just don't see that realistic.

It really is fucking awesome. I has it, I finished it, and I is playing it again coz its that good.
Dunno about the really high scroes it was getting, I've seen a few things wrong with it, but it is still about a 9/10, just not the 10/10s that ive been seeing.

Cider, feel free to come demo it if you want, I can school you at guitar hero as well  :P

It came out for PC so I picked it up.  Having some issues with installing, but I'm giving it a second shot.

After hours of installation I finally got it to run... sort of.

Seriously.  The install failed the first two times.  Then you have to install all their fucking Windows Live shit.  Then there's the Windows Live patch which lets you access the new game patch which forces you to upgrade your Direct X and video card drivers.  Hours.

Then after all of that there are some serious texture issues.  It's not playable in it's current state.  From what I've read this is almost ubiquitous.  I guess I just have to sit and wait for the patches.

I completely understand the argument for PC gaming, but this kind of shit pisses me the fuck off.

I had no issues with it, but I have a fairly new PC (about 6 months)... There are a few texture issues still, but pretty good all up...

Well the game is still unplayable on my PC even now. Luckily I have the XBox360 version too. My PC can do Crisis on reasonable detail and Oblivion on high detail both with descent resolutions. It can't do GTA IV on minimal settings and minimum resolution and make it playable. GTA IV PC sucks.

Anyway back to my reason for posting! Watch this great little video. 15 days in Liberty City. 15 game days in 2 1/2 minutes.

Crap.  I was just thinking about installing it again hoping they'd have fixed it.  What a waste of money.

I never did get GTA IV to run. I'll never buy another game without ensuring it's not a half assed port ever again. Rockstar never fucked me before, but they sure did here.

Anyway, here's a kick ass Back to the Future mod for anyone with better luck than me.

I read a story about people playing GTA IV online. This guy and his friends had invented a game called Hello-copter. The trick was to get in a helicopter, find a friend, hover over them, bail out, and yell "hellooo..." and then "copter!" just as your body crashes at their feet. They get about two seconds to look up and see the helicopter about to crash down on their head.

So I tried to install it again. They patched it up pretty well, and I can run the PC version on pretty high settings without any issues.

I thought I was making okay progress for the time I've spent on it, but my brother started playing at the same time and he has pretty much all of the features unlocked. I'm just getting off the first island.

It is an improvement on GTA III and its spawn.

The fighting is probably the biggest improvement. It's not a FPS, so it's never going to be the best fighting, but I think the previous games would have been immensely improved with a system closer to this.

The added realism of stealing cars, driving cars, and escaping cops is also appreciated. There are times where I wish I could have a car that drove a bit more like a video game than real life, but I appreciate what they were going for.

The story telling still kind of sucks in places. Characters pop up that you've never met, but act like they've been there all game. Motivation is inconsistent. It's mostly about doing things that teach you to use the game or show off something cool. Which is fine, but not great.

I'm not sure off the top of my head. It was a gifted box without a hard drive and a few other parts I had to swap out as I went.

The video card and hard drive are new. The rest is old and scavenged. I can't imagine any of it is much more than five years old.
