Starcraft 2 (PC)
« on: October 14, 2008, 07:12:19 AM »
I've been a little underwhelmed by what I've seen of this so far, but I still have (sort of) high hopes.  I'm just not sure how you revolutionize a RTS at this point other than "cooler graphics".

They've just announced that it will be release as three separate games.  One for each campaign.  So it's three times the game but if you want to play more than one side, it sounds like you'll have to pay for it.

Not too keep on having to buy 3 games to get it all... Unless they are priced down to around $40-$50 each...

What if each one is a full and complete game?

I cant really see them doing that, but if that was the case then I would imagine that they would be around $90-$100 each... I guess I would get them all anyway, but I would probably be a while between purchasing each one...

There's no way all three will be a complete game - can you imagine them writing completely different code three times? I've never met a developer that keen :P

It will probably a dawn of war style thing - one engine, one graphic architecture, but each box will add a 'layer' of new units, campaigns, map types, whatever.

Seems dumb to ship the game three times - better to just have the main game in a box and add-on campaigns, otherwise you'll never use half the program on the 2nd and 3rd discs you buy.

But I'm with Ghandi - if they're all $100, no way I'll get all three, at least not at once

$90-$100?  What the hell?  What video game costs more than $50?

By a full game I didn't mean a whole new game engine.  They way they've done it is that you have three campaigns that are each about a third of a game long.  I picture them making three full length campaigns, one for each side.

...you've paid $100 for a video game?  100 real dollars?  Only once or twice have I ever paid as high as $50 because I couldn't wait half a year for it to drop to $20..  I can think of sooo many better ways to use that kind of money.

Well currently AUS$100 is US$67 so it is still higher. It has been an issue in Australia for years, we get raped on game costs.

For console games, you just get that chip installed and buy pirated games.

They basically force us to turn to piracy through their shitty overcharging.

Piracy...  Masturbation...  Piracy...

I'm comfortable with the choice I've made.

Masturbating pirates?
Only you would bring up Music Man here.  ...and have it be totally relevant.

Ouch.  I assume that's the $50ish a game and the rumored 3 games.  Yeah, that's a turn off.  I'm not sure what demographic they're targeting.  The loser that lives in his mom's basement that just happens to also be loaded?

So, Lanky, how is it?  Is it really innovative or is it the same RTS with prettier graphics?

Well the multiplayer side of things, like choosing the game and such, is really good. But ultimately it is the same game but fancier graphics and some new units.

MASTURBATING PIRATES FTW!!!!
I used to think piracy was bad, because I first heard about it by people who didn't understand it. I understand piracy now. Piracy is good.

My best friend did, and he loves it. Each version of the game released will have a different solo campaign (Terran, Zerg, 'Toss) but you can play all 3 races as multiplayer. Apparently it rocks super-hard, on the pros, has amazing graphics and is just as stable and awesome as the old starcraft.

On the drawbacks, you only get one race's story per $50, sure they added some new content but it's the same core game, and to be honest I'm just not that excited.

FYI, I used to be a starcraft master, was ranked pretty dang high on Battle.Net (it was me and a bunch of Koreans). However, for some reason - maybe it's having a wife, or a kid, or a life now - I'm just not that into this anymore.

I played it a bit about a year ago now.

I did really like the concept of upgrading between missions and that being a motivation to perform optional quests on each mission. It's a game I could see myself buying when I can get the whole trilogy for $40.

Wow. You must've been pretty hardcore. But yes, other activities can take over and detract from the pleasure of game playing. I was like that—and somewhat disappointed that I didn't enjoy playing PC games as much anymore—until Minecraft.

Superman pointed out that my trying Minecraft with a touchpad and not a mouse might have coloured my experience

I've tried playing Minecraft with my touchpad. It's not the same. Many games designed for use with a mouse are annoying to play with a touchpad.
