Relive the golden age of CRPG
« on: November 17, 2009, 20:30:30 PM »
What have "Planescape:Torment", "Baldur's Gate", "Baldur's Gate: Tales of the sword Coast", "Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn", Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal", "Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter" and "Icewind Dale II" all have in common? Well appart from being some of the best RPG games of all time (suck it JRPG fans) they are all powered by the infinity engine. Now what is the one thing that stops you going back and playing these awesome games? The low resolution means playing with either 8bit-esque graphics or in a teeny-tiny little window. Not to mention the lack of support for widescreen resolutions if you go with the blow-up method. What if you could play these games and instead of blowing up the graphics you just opened up the view area? Well you can, check out the G3 widescreen mod for the infinity engine. See here for some screen-shots of "Planescape:Torment"  as you wish you could have seen it back in the day.

 :win:

Now if only someone would do the same for Fallout and Fallout 2.

GOG.com sells some of these games. I like GOG.com. Unlimited downloads. No DRM.

Anyway, graphics don't stop me... I've been playing some oldies... it's not the picture that counts, it's the game quality. The picture just helps.
LOL @ Pam... if I had $20 for every time someone used that word with me... well....

I'd probably have like $60

Yeah but when played at VGA or SVGA levels these games still look really good. It is just today's increased resolutions that makes them look blocky and horrible. This lets you play them at the right size but not in a tiny little window. Makes you appreciate just how good pre-3D games could be.

*sigh* it seemed like a greater percentage of old games were better and that nowadays only a small percentage of games cut the mustard. Somehow, I think nostalgia is making me think this and that today's standard is just as good as when we had to use more imagination.

What I think is the problem is that the percentage of mediocre games is growing.

Any of this on the iPhone?
I used to think piracy was bad, because I first heard about it by people who didn't understand it. I understand piracy now. Piracy is good.

First you have to obtain written permission for Steve Jobs.

...we'll wait.

He'll die, and someone else will license it. That's the future of Job-less Apple.

Although I am looking into this, and don't really see any way it would work on a portable device, as it needs full screen. Bah. I've always wanted to play these games, but only am on a laptop maybe 3% or my weekly free time, which means I'm either on here or researching something.
