PS3

Well at least Sony is good at one thing: fucking shit up.  Did they even test this shit?  Sony released the newest version of their firmware on Tuesday and have already pulled it.

Unfortunately, the only currently known fix for those with a non-operational system is a save game-erasing hard drive reformat. One could always transfer saves over to another media device prior to reformat, but the only other option at this time is sending it in to Sony for a $150.00 repair
Okay, so why should anyone have to pay for such a repair.  They broke, they can pay for it to be fixed. Or they can at least provide the other devices free of charge to people trying to salvage their saved games.

More of Sony screwing shit up.

Sony has admitted, no, bragged that they purposely made the PS3 hard to program games for.  That way, as game developers figured out how to code for it, the games would get better and better.

I guess as long as they don't piss of developers and lose all those exclusive deals they have they'll be fine.

Oops.

Quote from: Digital Spy
PlayStation boss Kazuo Hirai has revealed that the PS3 was made intentionally difficult to program for in order to boost its longevity.

Speaking to the Official PlayStation Magazine, Hirai explained that the move was a conscious decision to ensure that programmers had to work hard to uncover its power.

"It's not easy to program for the PS3. I wouldn't say it's endless in terms of what the console can do, but we pack so much depth into our consoles that it takes a while for anybody, including first party studios, to really harness the power," he said.

Hirai also suggested that making a console easy to develop for from the beginning can have an adverse effect on its life-cycle.

"We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years?" he said.

First good PS3 news I've heard.  Prices are still coming down, and they might be coming out with a slim version.

I've always been a late adopter on this stuff anyway.  With the Xbox and the PS3 it's just gotten out of hand.  There are a few games that are only on the PS3 that I'd kind of like to play, but without a severe price cut and a severe size reduction I wasn't interested.

The problem with the PS3 is that the PS2 is such a sturdy unit that most of them are still running and you can still get a lot of games for them. If I could play all of my PS1 and PS2 games on a PS3 I would consider upgrading if they take at least $200 of the current  price tag. Until that happens, I am sticking with the PS2

I dunno about...  the optical drives on a certain batch of the PS2 were pretty damn shitty, and once it went EOL I lived in constant fear that mine would fail.   I find that a lot of Madman DVDs straight out of the pack from JB Hi-Fi don't work though they sometimes work on my laptop, and I've yet to work out whether its Madman, JB Hi-Fi or Sony at fault.  I blame all of them.

I've had my PS2 for ... almost forever. I know some friends who had trouble with theirs, but mostly they're good machines. Certainly better than 360 or original Xbox. I agree with lanky and Superman. I'd probably own a PS3 if the price dropped, and backwards compatibility wouldn't hurt, or some more titles that I'd care about owning.

It's official.  Slim and $299.

Of course they got rid of PS2 compatability.  How about you ditch the stupid ass BluRay and let me play all the game I already bought?

Because then you won't spend money buying new versions of the old games.

It reminds me of my music collection.  I've purchased three versions of my favorite artists' albums: Cassette tape, vinyl and CD.

The orginial 60GB version was backwards compatible... then they stopped making the chipset and changed to a different one which no longer supported the feature...

Basically Sony are bad. Go buy a wii. They are backwards compatible* with all nintendo products.

By backwards compatible I mean you can download emulated versions for a small fee.

I might have to buy a PS3 anyway in 2010 when they release FFXIV. It's supposed to be PC/PS3 only, unlike XI, which was on every system except the cube.

I can already play every NES game.  I'm not spending hundreds of dollars on a system that plays games that are actually less advanced than modern browser games that I can play for free.  Link Link  I want to play some GTA IV, MGS, and other amazing groundbreaking games without going broke or throwing unnecessary amounts of cash at Bill Gates.

I have access to both the Xbox 360 and the Wii. I like both of them. The wii is good for getting drunk and making mastubatory motions with the wii-remote (read: phallus) which is conveniently covered by a latex sleeve to keep it safe (read: wii-condom) as part of most games.

The 360 is good for GTA, and other "groundbreaking" games (but if you want truly groundbreaking you will be buying PC).

I suppose the PS3 would be an equivalent to the 360 in terms of my setup, i.e wii = casual gaming, 360/ps3 = "hardcore" gaming, however I have just never got into sony's console, just never really clicked with it.

My primary reason for the PS3 over the 360 would the Gran Tourismo series... sure the 360 has racing games, but none of them are even close in size to the GT games...

Yeah I think that's part of why I never got into the ps3, I'm not a massive fan of racing games. I played Need for Speed 3 years ago, but that was about it. I usually stuck to the FPS content from consoles, but a PC can accomplish that easily, and as my console hating friends would have you believe, a PC is a lot better to play on (mouse = more accurate, I personally never have a problem killing shit on my 360).

I'm terrible at PC gaming. Mouse = inaccurate for me. And using the keyboard + mouse to move/shoot/whatever is apparently beyond my capability. But I do wish my 360 were able to take videos of me doing awesome stuff in-game like the computer can.

No offence to you at all Ghandi, but I never cared for the GT games at all.  Personally, if my car doesn't spend at least 50% of the time with its wheels off the ground and/or have guns attached to it, I'm not interested.

Monster Truck Madness was practically the first racing game I played on a PC, it was either that or Need For Speed, I can't remember.

The graphics were awesome, and you got to drive big ass monster trucks around running into stuff. I recall they had a replay mode thing where after each race, it would show your impressive jumps, or actually...maybe that was just me tweaking the camera while actually racing, I can't remember too clearly, it was years ago.

I also remember something about a giant fire breathing t-rex that would eat cars, I think it was a truck you unlocked, or it was in the scenery in a few tracks, something like that.

EDIT: Oh GOD!!! How could I forget the commentary!! "Bigfoot is doin it IN THE AIR!!!"  :win:

Need for Speed was the only racing game I really ever played. No, wait, I take that back. I played something hella fun on the Wii at a friend's house, and I also played a crappy racing game on the NES, I think. Maybe it was Sega. I dunno. I don't care so much about racing games. I like shooting things. :guns:

Personally, I'm not a big fan of consoles trying to be more and more like PCs.  I just want something to play games on.  I don't want to pay extra for all this other crap I don't want.

That said.  If they have to put web browsing onto a PS3, I guess I'm kind of excited to hear about the rumor that PS3 is looking to partner up with Firefox.

At work I have the latest version of Firefox. It has one add-on, the SpeedBug. When I click the icon to open it it takes almost a minute to kick in. IE7 is up in 30 seconds, Chrome is almost instant.

And yes, I have tried removing the SpeedBug add-on, only a few seconds faster.

Holy shit, that is shameless rip-offery.  How do they sleep at night?

Also, I learnt from the panicked rantings of various people at work that playstation's network shat itself into a fail-induced coma on March 2. Worldwide.  People in various national dress holding hands around globe united by the handshake of why-the-fuck-is-offline-play-not-even-working-right-now?

Any game with a trophy system was affected, and apparently even saved games and saved trophies were being deleted.

The reason is apparently because PS3 is too retarded to understand that February only has 28 days, so it was a kind of March 1 bug.

It only affected certain versions of PS3.
