The Portal sequel has been delayed.  The first thing I thought was, "They're making a Portal sequel?  Awesome!"

It was a great game, and I think it even shocked valve with its success.
I used to think piracy was bad, because I first heard about it by people who didn't understand it. I understand piracy now. Piracy is good.

I like J.K. Simmons. I should hope that the humour in those videos is carried into the game.

It's one of the most innovative games of all time with an elegant story telling style to boot. I can't imagine anyone not liking it.

I played the sequel to just past where she wakes up last night. It's as wonderful as always. Stephen Merchant is just fucking brilliant.

What a perfect game.

I've heard some people complain about needless complexity, graphic showoff-iness, and long transitions from one part of the game to the next. Portal did have some beauty in its simplicity. The story was tight because the range of the environment was tight. I get the elegance of what they did. However, I love how well they expanded that universe while keeping the same tone.

The story isn't one I would have picked, but after seeing it executed, I can't imagine them doing anything else. It's very well told with very subtle story telling techniques, and just well woven into the gameplay as the original. Stephen Merchant introducing the Wheatley character was especially good.

Just as in the original, you're taught techniques through "testing" and then you have to use those abilities to survive later out of the proper game. If there was one thing I would change, it would be to do a little more of that. They did get out of the testing rooms a lot more with this game, but I would have done even a little more of that. They do it so well, that I would encourage them to keep pushing that envelope.

Overall, it's as good now as Portal was then. I really, really hope they find a way to make a worthy successor again.

(Addendum: I haven't even touched the multiplayer yet. I'm told that's where the real fun is.)

First reaction: Ha, ha!  I like that.

Thinking about it for a bit:  Wait a second, for the blue portal to be there, he'd have to of been in that room or been able to face that wall. Assuming the mouse is only able to shoot the portal when being in the room with the cheese, and that each maze is used once before being replaced with a new one it doesn't make sense.  The mouse would have to find the cheese room, shoot blue portal, go back to spawn to shoot the orange one, or the mouse shot an orange one, went to cheese, shot blue portal then took the cheese through the blue portal to eat the cheese at spawn.  In no way does that help the mouse get the cheese faster, also the mouse would eat the cheese where he found it, there's no reason he'd want to bring it back to spawn.

Yay ruining jokes with logic.

There are lots of puzzles where you could get behind the objective, but not reach it. Imagine there's a large gap between the cheese and the spawn. He can shoot a portal at the cheese, turn around and then launch a second at the wall behind him. Add a wrap around path that goes behind the cheese if you want the portal to literally be on either side of the body.

Every morning I have to drive to work and I think, "If I had a Portal gun, I'd just set one in my home and one in my office and I could literally just roll out of bed and be there."

And I always determine which surfaces would be portal-friendly when I go new places.

One must appreciate such things. As long as breaking the game doesn't rely on the creators anticipating it and your solution goes unrewarded. There'd be little more frustrating than figuring out a puzzle and the game not recognising it.

Quote from: PAReport
Chris DePrisco is the head of product development at the Automated Laser Corporation. One day he was testing the company’s 20 watt fiber laser by cutting grid-shaped patterns and realized that if he changed the speed and fill spacing of the laser, it began to make different tones. While many of us would find that interesting and then go on about our day, DePrisco is not a normal man. No, he decided that he had to program the laser to play “Still Alive,” the ending theme of the first Portal game.

“The closer the fill spacing versus the width of the rectangle, the higher the pitch as the laser will turn on and off up to hundreds of times a second. This makes a sound similar to a square wave audio signal,” he explained to the Penny Arcade Report. “From there it was just using a music tuner app on my phone and trial and error.” After he had found each of the notes needed for the song, he copied each note along with time delay events to try to match the timing of the song as closely as possible. “It probably took close to 6 hours in total to get everything sorted at home and after work,” he said.

The results speak for themselves.

Because it’s not enough to make the laser sing, the end result is the logo of Aperture Science. “Once I had all the notes, I imported the outline of the logo and placed all the marks to fit,” he said. It’s just that easy, folks.

The real question is why? To our delight, DePrisco gave the only appropriate answer: Because. “Why did I spend 6 hours on it? It was a combination of having some spare time and once I started I knew I had to finish, no matter the cost.” It doesn’t hurt that DePrisco is a huge fan of Portal. He also has a Portal-themed sports bike. And access to lasers.

Here’s to science!

That is stinking awesome!

I got in the shiny new "smart" elevators at this hotel I'm staying at this week and the elevator had a robotic female voice that immediately reminded me of GlaDOS.  A little off-putting particularly because these elevators tell YOU where to go.

No - literally... on the wall panel outside in the elevator lobby you input which floor you want to go to.. then the panel tells you which elevator car to wait in front of.  You can only get on the elevator that's setup to go to your floor.  No holding the doors for someone else and the elevator talks to you.

this is a bad video someone made at the same hotel I'm staying:

Somewhere around the 4 minute mark the video maker uses the disabled person's mode which talks to you more -- GlaDOS 1.0!

I logged into Steam for the first time in a while and found a 75% off Portal 2. I already have Portal 2. Anyone want it? It's only good for another 10 days.

Great.  My boyfriend chewed up the rest of last month's peak data downloading it and we haven't even played it yet.
Feeling obnoxious, might delete later.

I don't know, but it's 75% off if you want it.
