Populous (PC)

I really liked the premise of this game, but similarly, my PC couldn't run it at the time.

Does anyone remember Populous? By development studio, Bullfrog? Black & White reminds me of this game. Well, both of these games were designed by Peter Molyneux, also responsible for Dungeon Keeper! I HAVE Dungeon Keeper but it won't friggin work on Vista. I also had Populous and Populous II (along with Syndicate, Magic Carpet and two other Bullfrog games that I can't remember), but I must've somehow lost them in the move from my last house... :(

Well, Bullfrog rocked. Which might be why EA bought them.

Mmmm populous. Should try it out.

I used to think piracy was bad, because I first heard about it by people who didn't understand it. I understand piracy now. Piracy is good.

Yeah, it's bound to be available somewhere..

UPDATE: OK, they're both (Populous I and II) on Abandonia. Also, Power Monger might be more up your alley, but I couldn't get the hang of it years ago. I'll give it another go, too. I love these older games.

Populous: The Beginning is a bit different from the first two games. While they were true God games, where you can only influence your people, The Beginning changes your role to the shaman leading her tribe. I think Abandonia described it best when they said:

Populous II was released by Bullfrog Productions in 1993, as the follow-up to their earlier hit Populous. It was followed in 1998 by Populous: The Beginning, which saw the series move to a fully 3D environment changed its focus to a much smaller population, while vastly improving the storyline, but somehow losing some indefinable element of its predecessors' charm.

I still had fun playing Populous: The Beginning, though, so I recommend you give it a go.

EDIT: Well, blow me down, the appearance you choose as a God will affect how your people behave!
Before beginning the game, you must create your deity. You can select a name for yourself, and choose your appearance. In a clever, and rarely-seen, twist, your appearance has an impact on the gameplay - if you choose a warlike, angry appearance, your battles will be fought in an aggressive manner, while choosing a more scholarly look will lead to a more subtle game requiring greater finesse.

Then I guess they'll get off from killing the opposition.
