Hades:
Dude!
OnLive
[wiki]Onlive[/wiki]

Superman:
Is that the server side gaming thing?

Hades:
Yeah.

Superman:
Yeah, crazy stuff

Hades:
People are saying "impractical", but people have no problems playing Counterstrike online or any of the other current ones.

Superman:
It adds to my theory that consoles are just about dead.

Hades:
http://www.quakelive.com/
I think that proves it.  3D, 100% in browser, completely over the net...  I've played it, it's awesome.  Like quake arena but (a) free (b) not stored locally.

Superman:
I've been playing that since Lanky posted it on LL.  Very awesome.

Hades:
8 year old graphics, still impressive when JUST in a web browser.  Think what they can do with their own customized system.  Probably not 360 graphics or PS3, but Xbox or PS2? Mos def.  I bet they'll preload a buncha textures, etc to the system so it's just the rendering instructions over the net which leaves like 10% of the data .  They'll cover that with talk about "system upgrades".  Want to play the new game?  Gotta upgrade the system.  People wont notice, or care.  It will be a dodge.  1TB HD in every one of those boxes and you are good to go you know?

Superman:
Yeah.  Quake Live one is a great demonstration of it working on a low level.

Hades:
Yeah, but like I said, preloaded textures to the box, etc, etc...  They can make it work on a new level.

Superman:
I agree.  It's been really interesting to see what the industry people make of all of this.  I've been saying for a while that consoles are as good as dead after this.  Nintendo probably still has a place but Sony and Microsoft are really arne't working with technology that needs a dedicated device.

Hades:
Yeah.  Which is funny coz I don't like the concept of online content.  I like not having to be connected.  Piracy is easier.  Yarrrrr.

Superman:
A lot of execs and reviewers and commentators seem really reluctant to cede to a paradigm shift, but I think that's what we're looking at.

Hades:
We are.  I'm fighting it as best I can.

Superman:
I don't know.  I spend more time playing simple mindless browser based games than I do on graphic intensive local based games.

I think this shows that at some point we don't need any specific dedicated device to play games.  The idea of being harnessed to a specific box is just outdated.

My limited technical understanding is that most of the graphic load would be handled server side.  So they're running the game (or most of the game) on their machine and broadcasting that to your screen (sort of).

Fire Hazard Prompts Gigantic Dell Laptop Battery Recall

Quote from: The article you linked to
The comapany said the overheating was caused by a manufacturing defect in batteries made for it by Sony.

Sony makes the batteries.  It didn't just happen to Dell either.

I think it makes a lot of sense that it would be Dell custom-designing servers for a new gaming platform.  Also, unless we're talking about the CMOS, Dell isn't going to be putting Sony batteries in their servers.

Ah. Missed that.

In CA somehow SOny sidestepped the blame, the social outcry was against Dell. Don't ask why.

I'm actually not at all impressed with their games list.

It looks like there's a free trial.  I'm going to at least try out the trial when I get home and report back.

It's a little laggy, but I'm playing it over wifi and it's still playable.  I'm sure that'll go away when I go into the other room and actually plug it in.

I guess my problem is that the whole concept is different than I thought.  I thought I was going to pay a subscription fee of $XX a month and I could play whatever games for that month.  Instead you pay to "buy" games or to use them for just a couple days.  So it's $20 to buy AVP, $9 to play for 5 days, or $6 for 3 days.  That's not any different than Steam except that with OnLive it's not stored locally while I play (so it doesn't run as well) and on Steam I can't rent the games which isn't a deal on OnLive anyway.

To top it off, like I said earlier, the selection of games just isn't that good.

I guess the free trial thing is worth trying out new games on?

Steam is awesome. I think they have an amazing creative way to combat piracy, reward paying players, etc. Steam is (in my opinion) one of the first real effective steps to combat piracy.

Onlive looks like too little, too late.

Late is fine if you bring something new to the table like it sounded like they were going to.  They just developed a new game distribution method that doesn't work any better than existing ones (maybe worse) and effectively doesn't do anything different.

Runs better, more games, better games, better pricing scheme...  Yeah, I'm not ditching Steam anytime soon.

I guess OnLive has that weird "rental" thing, which I don't think anyone with half a brain would want.  So they're better at sucking?

In all seriousness though, OnLive does have the free trial of games, which only works because of the system they have set up.  I think being able to play a game for 15 minutes or so before buying it is a pretty cool idea.  It doesn't make up for the rest, but it's one good feature.

I never did try out the monthly fee version of OnLive. That really should have been their selling point from the start. I wanted a Netflix streaming experience for video games, but they wanted to sell me something far more complicated. Does anyone know anyone that has tried out OnLive?
