Final Fantasy VII (PC, PS1)
« on: November 07, 2010, 09:27:26 AM »
I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit I have never actually played the game.

Growing up, video games were, well I can't say not allowed, but very limited. My first Final Fantasy was X. Loved it.

I've been meaning to play VII. Thanks to Super, for finding a PSOne memory card for me and a clever though somewhat unbelievable technique involving tape, I have been able to play it on my PS2.  I played Crises Core on PSP, so some of the plot I already know.

I adore it. It's all I can think about.

I once filed off the edges of a Japanese cartridge, exposing the circuit, but also allowing it to fit in my Sega Mega Drive (Genesis). Gotta love those hacks.

Also, why embarrassed not to have played FFVII?
LOL @ Pam... if I had $20 for every time someone used that word with me... well....

I'd probably have like $60

I'm embarrassed because it is supposedly THE Final Fantasy game. I'm a FF lover and had not played it yet. Seems like something one should be embarrassed about.

Well, I popped open my PS2 and tried to adjust the laser to the sweet spot (where it would play ALL the colored discs) but alas the sweet spot eluded me. When you can't beat it, go around it I always say. Thank you internet. I love you.

What deux farg? Laser sweet spot? What fancy arse hack is this??

Yeah, I guess you should be embarrassed if you're a fan. I've only played FFX2. How does that rate among the FF franchise?

I speak no lies, my good man.  I read if you play with the laser height you might be able to find the perfect setting.  I could not find it.  Of course, I have a very old PS2.  I was just proud of myself for trying and not blinding myself.  That's always good.

Yeah, I guess you should be embarrassed if you're a fan. I've only played FFX2. How does that rate among the FF franchise?

It was ok.  It wasn't my favorite by any means.  Kind of short, though not as short as Crises Core.  X2 was more of a side quest type of game.  Though I have to give them kudos for making Yuna hotter than she was in X.  As of right now, Dissidia (PSP) is my favorite thus far, but my opinion might change once I get further into VII.

I've played F 3,4,6,7,8,9 and 10 - and I have 1, 2, and 5 here ready to go for when i get time (on my DS).

Seriously, 7 was the first one I played, and the reason I got hooked on the series. The summons, the plot, I loved it. 8 was okay, nothing in comparison, but to be honest with you my favorite in the whole series is 9. Perfect game, all in. So - my order of FF rating:

9
7
6
4 (the remake on DS)
10
8
3

I know there are some 10 lovers who will hate me for rating it so low, but to be honest with you, a LOT of the 'innovations' didn't wash with me, and the story was just..... yeah. I can understand how a graphically superior product can drag you in more quickly, but 6 was as old school as they come, and it's still my 3rd fav.
I used to think piracy was bad, because I first heard about it by people who didn't understand it. I understand piracy now. Piracy is good.

I've played I and II.  At the time I had a hard time tracking down III so I stopped.  I'll have to start the journey again sometime.

I remember when VII came out, but I've never played it for more than a few minutes.

My ex got hooked on X and X2 and then I lost her to XI.  Maybe I'll just stop at VII.

Is that the Japanese numbering, or did you play the US #2, which was Final Fantasy IV?

It was very visually appealing (X), and I like pretty things...and boobs...heaving ones at that.  I was not a fan of the sphere grid at all.  The hubs told me one of the things a lot of people complained about with VII was the materia and how you attach it to weapons and armor.  I think it's fanfvckin'tabulous being able to max them out and apply them to whomever you choose.

I've played I and II.  At the time I had a hard time tracking down III so I stopped.  I'll have to start the journey again sometime.

I played the PSP remake of I.  I was not impressed.  Nobody wanted to tell you anything.  I spent a lot of time going "Sooooo...now what?"

XII was decent.  It was a little too easy for my taste, but the bounty hunting was fun.

I find that with old school games it depends upon whether I used to play it or not. For example, I can still play Elite II:Frontier (1993), but I couldn't get into Redneck Rampage (1997) because the controls felt clumsy.

I played Phantasy Star 1 (or was it 2?) back on the Sega Master System and loved it. If I found it again now, I'd probably still love it. My neighbour had Final Fantasy from Hong Kong on his Famicom, I think, and although it looked awesome to me then, I don't know if I could get into it now.

I've played I, II, III and IV for a gameboy advanced emulator and got really bored with all of them.

I've played X a little but never went very far.  I played VIII a bit more but drifted off.

No, the first and only FF for me is VII.  Theoretically I still have the discs and the memory card with my last saved game on it, but I can't find either.  I would go and find it but I have some life plans at the moment that would interfere, seeing as they involve leaving the house and talking to people.   This is not compatible with me playing FFVII.

I love the weapons and materia and all that.  It was a fantastic battle system.  I never got into X's equivalent system as much as I did VII's.  I spent forever just roaming around, switching around materia on different weapons with maximum growth until they maxed out on AP, and then reading up on various materia combos.  I loved it.

I might have to.  Decent copies of FFVII seem overpriced because fanboys keep them in the packaging as collector's items.  Collecting is the stupidest hobby ever, right after golf and scrapbooking. It ruins everything.

Forgive me for being childish about this, but uhhh I think the frogs are my favorite part (where they hit you and you turn into a frog) because I find tiny frogs b!tch slapping each other to death oddly hysterical.

How much are you going to pay for it?

The really annoying thing is I used to have 2 Final Fantasy VII copies.  One was bought back in the day when it had just gone platinum and the price was only $40, and then another one I bought after I left home and wasn't on good enough terms with my family to go taking back my playstation games.  That one was $100, unopened.  So I've spent $140 on FFVII and have nothing to show for it, except an intricate understanding of how to breed chocobos.

$0ish.

My ex FB chatted me the other night to tell me she's getting a divorce because her husband is sleeping with a 22 year old.  I mustered zero sympathy and then asked if I could borrow the copy of FFVII I bought for her years and years ago.

Oh I bahleted the retarded name calling because I thought maybe you had an explanation of what Hades meant that would make everything clear.   But then you didn't.  So maybe I should unretract it.

Unretarded and unretract aren't real words but at least they make sense.  :P

I know you deleted it, but it was your first reaction.

I don't think it's fair to expect me to be able to explain it. I can rarely successfully explain my own thought processes. I think I understood what he was attempting to say, but I'm not sure I understand Hades at all. Its only sense is in it doesn't make sense.

Sorry..... if I say... things weird. But one day, taints will outnumber you ALL!

I keep re-reading it all, and I keep not getting it, even with the eye for an eye thing.  Maybe I'm just jealous.   Maybe I can be my own special retarded twin.

tainted said it's karma, Hades said it's karma in a more roundabout way. The only problem is, Superman never said anything apart from being able to muster zero sympathy. So unless they know about some other truth where Super cheated on his ex-girlfriend, they're making up stuff.

::sigh:: What a lonely existence this is.

She used you for sex basically since she cheated on you. I drew my own conclusion here. You, in turn when she was looking for sympathy, tried to use her to obtain a copy of the game. She is a sex slut, and you became a video game whore. I don't see how it could be any more clear.

I guess I still don't see any of what you just typed in what Hades typed, but I'm over it.  I'd rather hear about FF VII.

Because you're focusing on what he typed as opposed to seeing what he tried to type but failed to do so....whatever...we're soulmates. Quit questioning our love bond.

I'm 40+ hours in. I possess all nine obtainable characters. Most of them are near level fifty. I just finished Yuffie's side quest. I'm still on disc one and currently looking for the cave of the Ancients or something.

Yes, yes love I have. Longer probably, as the hubs and I moved in together in...2005. It's his game. If it had been before I had the little one, I would have tried harder to find one, but since I have become less selfish and do without if she or the hubs desire or need something. So, you can imagine my excitement.

True? Why do all the big, bad dudes in FF always have that magenta color in their long flowing robes?

It makes them impervious to bullets. Hence why we need swords and magics to hurt them.

So...you're saying there's a for real reason why every bad guy in the FF series has magenta colored clothing.  Interesting.

If you mean 'real' as 'something I just made up' - then yes, that is totally legit.

I actually think it had something to do with the 16 bit era, they gave the main characters reds and blues whites and blacks, and needed other colours for the bad guys. They wanted them colourful, so magenta and a few others were used. They had to use clothing, as the graphicd often left little room for facial differences.

For later games, I think it just became..... a thing they'd always done.

You got this far in the game and just noticed that?

I've noticed that in every FF game I've played, the main character is a socially retarded jerk.  Maybe that just helps the story along or something.

It may be too late.  On more than one occasion she's asked, "Mommy, can I play your game?  Pleeeaaase??"  She actually has a pretty firm handle on it considering she's seven.

Breeding chocobos. I finally have a green female and a blue male. I'm about to start racing them to get their stats up before I breed them. I'm not looking forward to it. The chocobo racing song is far too catchy.
