Black and White (PC)
« on: July 27, 2010, 05:44:23 AM »
My brother's friend lent him Black and White a long time ago.  It barely played on our computer.  I remember really liking the possibilities, but it was fairly unplayable and would then crash a lot.  I couldn't find anyone selling it, but I yarred it and played the intro.

You play a god.  You help out (or not) the people that have summoned you.  Also you have a pet that you can train to help out (or not) the people of your village.

I still haven't got to the meat of the game, but I have the general feel.  It's still really cool.  Especially for a game almost a decade old.

Yeah I know someone who wants to get this game and was trying to figure out whether he'd be able to get it to run.  The internets says this is supported only up to Win 2K - was that why it was crashing on yours?

Do you think it's worth the effort of getting it to work?

It was crashing on my old computer growing up.  Probably Win '95.  That had everything to do with it being a relic when Black and White came out.

I'm running XP and it works fine.  I've read lots of complaints of it not running well on 7.  I haven't heard anything from people running Vista because people running Vista can't connect to the internet.

Ooh, if it works on XP then it might not require any shenanigans at all.

I bought this game because my friend worked at EA and we got games made by them for like $4 each.

First of all, let me say the premise is AWESOME. You are a GOD! Holy Crap! But the gameplay is actually rather shallow, and there is no real 'meat' of the game - it's mission based (kinda) but sometimes they are unclear and unrewarding, so you may be trying to be a GOOD dude only to realize that the dam fell down before you noticed (and the people freaking out do not USE THEIR WORDS) and then you find yourselves eating their young because you want to weed out the PUSSIES and then.... they label you a *bad* God? Why?

Have the makers of this game READ the old testament?

For fucks sake, had they, they would realize I can do WHATEVER and have these people worship me. Goddamn. This game pisses me off.

I used to think piracy was bad, because I first heard about it by people who didn't understand it. I understand piracy now. Piracy is good.

I really liked the premise of this game, but similarly, my PC couldn't run it at the time.

Does anyone remember Populous? By development studio, Bullfrog? Black & White reminds me of this game. Well, both of these games were designed by Peter Molyneux, also responsible for Dungeon Keeper! I HAVE Dungeon Keeper but it won't friggin work on Vista. I also had Populous and Populous II (along with Syndicate, Magic Carpet and two other Bullfrog games that I can't remember), but I must've somehow lost them in the move from my last house... :(

Well, Bullfrog rocked. Which might be why EA bought them.
LOL @ Pam... if I had $20 for every time someone used that word with me... well....

I'd probably have like $60
