I don't want to be a smartarse, but of course a run up makes the ball fly further. Simple biomechanics. I doubt there are any golfers who didn't know it after Happy Gilmore. The key to golf is accuracy, not power, which is why golfers don't do it. The fictitious Happy Gilmore's skill was his accuracy with the run up, which is almost impossible to emulate over 72 holes.

My family used to live right next to two of Knox's soccer fields, and in the school holidays my brothers and I would take my stepdad's golf clubs out there to practice our Happy Gilmore shots. It was epic. It really does work! And no, I don't care about accuracy. The dangerous unpredictability of the ball's trajectory just added to the fun.

If I meant physics I would have said physics. The movement, strain and force exerted by the body and the transfer of energy I would call biomechanics. But yes, physics would suffice. Of course, physicists love to point out that all science is ground in physics and I could argue that by labelling it biomechanics I was being simple, not obtuse.

OK, so I'll back myself up. Biomechanics is the application of mechanical principles to living things. So the run-up only adds momentum, I saw it more simply as physics instead of an additional mechcanical principle.
