Whitelisting
« on: April 03, 2012, 02:53:33 AM »
I'm looking for more input on how we want to control who can log onto our server.

The goal is to make it dead easy to get people we want on, while protecting ourselves from griefing.

I was always a big fan of keeping it open. When those guys burnt down the treehouse, I kind of let it go. When they came back and looted it, I was thinking whitelist. When I started rebuilding it, I felt I had to close us off.

Other than the New Zealand kids, no one has tried to log on since a few days after the white list was turned on. It seems like the kids my cousin invited over lost interest pretty quickly. From that, it seems like we can mostly trust that the bans are doing the job.

Also, I do keep pretty regular back ups now. If someone came in and did some major damage, we could pretty easily load up an old save. The problem, of course, is that we'd also lose any work done during that time.

Lanky was asking about a setting that would let someone log on, but not interact until whitelisted. I know there is third party software that does that. I imagine it might be pretty easy to use. The problem is that most third party stuff stops working after major updates. I suppose, if we're lucky, Mojang might build in that functionality soon or at least get that promised API up and running.

I'm completely open to how we want to take care of it. I'll do whatever the group consensus is.

It would be really sexy if there was a web interface for select members to be able to add things to the whitelist. Might have to do some Googling

Yeah. Like I said, any add ons  bring their own host of challenges, but I'm open to whatever.

It sounds like 1.2.5 is another step forward in mod support. The more of that there is, the more I'm in favor of using a mod for protecting the server.

I've experienced mods which let anyone log on and move within a world but doesn't let them destroy blocks.  Basically, you destroy a tile and a second later it's reinstated (I'm guessing the mod rejects your change before it allows that change to be reflected on the server).

I'm a fan of the whitelist.  In over a year of operation, no kind strangers wandered on to our server.  We might as well maintain a whitelist.  I need to see if I can get my brother to join us.  I have a feeling he'd love it.  I bought him a copy of Minecraft back in Alpha.

LOL @ Pam... if I had $20 for every time someone used that word with me... well....

I'd probably have like $60

Yeah. I want that.

I read Jeb's AMA. It sounds like the Bukkit team is really working on the multiplayer functionality and modding. I expect this kind of functionality will become part of the game or far easier to add very soon.

Does bx83 know he is on our whitelist?  I don't think he's ever played there before.

I was trying to get Vaati (my cousin's friend) on, but the whitelist was acting weird. When I checked the logs, I noticed this bx83 continually trying to log in. I tried to see if Lanky knew he he was, but I didn't get a response. I did a Google search and saw he was a follower of Lanky's on Twitter, so I just went ahead and whitelisted him too.

Not sure what I was doing that I didn't post all of that here before. Sometimes Lankyland sort of falls off my list when I'm on my computer at home. Sorry about that.

Is that the same Rebecca as Rebeccargh?

Also, where are all these people?  I never "see" (different arse ends of the world we are) anyone but lanky.

I don't know. I was drunk and Lanky told me to.

treefugger - Pianoman
dlane_skyward - My cousin
lankyzor - Lanky
vaati12 - Cousin's friend
brightcatseye - Greensteam
scoutx - Me
waygroovy - ?
atominevil - Roommate
gatoenpantalones - My brother
spiderofd00m - Cider
r3becca - ?
bx83 - ?

I think waygroovy was another one that logged on around the same time Lanky started, so I just assumed it was someone he knew. I think there's only one log on for him though.

Waygroovy sounds like a random.
bx83 is a friend of ours—trustworthy.

Gato en pantalones?  Haha.
