Redstone Academy
« on: March 30, 2013, 07:10:09 AM »
Obviously this is long term as I seem to have lost some drive and PM lost a computer, and this idea is actually from even longer ago.

I think we should have a redstone warehouse/testing facility. Something far enough away from other builds to not be in the way, where we can try out new blocks, experiment with contraptions, and show off tricks we've seen or discovered. Maybe even a room of the simplest circuits and stuff, to help educate each other.

Cool idea. But we're not the best circuit builders. Are you suggesting this because it's much easier if you can physically walk around a circuit to understand it? If so, I get it. Much easier.
LOL @ Pam... if I had $20 for every time someone used that word with me... well....

I'd probably have like $60

Exactly. I have figured a couple little things here and there while messing around with redstone. I thought it would be cool to have a central place for experimentation, education, and demonstration.

I've done a lot of playing around with redstone and piston machines.
Tell me where, and i'll build prototypes.

Hmmm.. well, Superman came up with this idea of having super-bases every 5km (i.e. every 5000 blocks).

Here's the last working map I could find: http://www.minecraftworldmap.com/worlds/oCBid#/

If you find the 0,0 chunk (a big round, grey circle) then you'll find roads stretching off in each direction. At 5km from that point will be a super base. I suppose you could build the testing facility of one of those? Superman might have also left some space for you at 0,0 but you'd need to check with him first. That place is his baby.

My last post in the "hoppers" thread details a machine i worked up. That could easily go in the redstone facility.

Flashing redstone torches can be done, it's just challanging, and really difficult to make it look good with all the wiring required.
CNBMinecraft is a clever fellow's Youtube channel. He focusses on creating useful designs, and then compacting them as much as possible. The best part is that he's much easier to understand than any other redstone designer I've found.

I will gladly do the boring part of making a shell if you'll be our resident redstone master and fill it with educational contraptions.

I'd be more than happy to.
I've got plenty of gadgets underway in my castle at the moment, with the workings hidden.
I can build them in the facility exposed for all to see.

I'll need space. Lots of space.

I started blocking off some rough space just on the other side of the road and east of your base, but the more I think about it, it might be closer than I'd like. It'll be closer to your base than not either way.

I found a better spot.

If you go back east towards the temple, there's a small road heading north that Pianoman and I set up to bring sand back for temple material. Follow that north a bit and I just built a new road heading back west again. You'll come across my new staging area soon enough.

I'm going to build north of that, over that rather large desert. I figure it has the added advantage of providing us with loads of sand when I dig out the foundation.

Here's the basic design I'm thinking of using.

I'm kind of finishing up on the front facade.

gumstitch, do you have any cool redstone magic you think might be cool to incorporate into the structure? Blinking lights? Rotating colors and textures? Something like that.

I tried to keep the walls sort of thick precisely so we could do that at some point. The middle part of the wall shrunk down to just two thick, but the base and the upper levels are full of space. Also, I'm digging out a basement and can add a sizable ceiling to hide any wiring.

Feel free to poke around if you're interested. If you build anything, maybe keep it to one half so I can use the other half for reference. I keep tearing down scaffolding so I can take prettier pictures. Feel free to put down dirt or ladders wherever you need.

I'm starting to get the Minecraft itch bad, and seeing grand constructions like this is only serving to make it more... itchy. I may have to fork out for my nice gaming computer. :)

I haven't had tons of time, but winter is coming.

My last request was sort of vague. I have a more specific request. Is there enough space in the center circle here to make something cool? Maybe a simulation of a clock or something.

a clock requires a mega large area. BUT we could make some blinking lights, or shifting colours. i think that space is big enough. i'll check it out soon.
BTW, the structure is crazy beautiful

Blinking lights is an idea. Or, if it's thick enough to hide the redstone, light the area and switch out different coloured blocks.

I'm still working on the interior, but I'll try to block out a space that's open for circuitry. More importantly, a floor for that level to walk on.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking a clock that actually tells time. Just movement like a clock. You're better at this stuff than me though. Whatever you think would look cool.

Yeah, I plan on using a lot of red on this guy.

Once you've coloured two sheep red, do they then produce mainly red offspring?

I think it chooses one parent at random and the offspring are that color. Maybe which order you feed them when breeding effects it? Either way, two red parents equal a red offspring.

I dug out the water I had covered up earlier so I could make a bridge. I'm not especially happy with the bridge yet though.

I also plotted out the far wall of the main building. It wont render the back and front at the same time. Oops.
